Good point.There are more mainstream Republicans (e.g., members of Congress) claiming there is a deep state than there are mainstream Democrats calling for the abolition of ICE. Also, calling for the abolition of ICE is just a stupid way of saying that there are severe injustices in the system that need to be corrected (because listeners naturally assume it is a call for unlimited immigration, which it isn't). If the same people made the underlying argument in a more sensible way, they wouldn't even be viewed as radicals. On the other hand, alleging a "deep state" is a massive attack on the legitimacy of the United States government, and one totally without supporting evidence. |

One advantage of going “extreme” is that the compromise is closer to what you really want. The problem is that mainstream Republicans always propose the extreme and mainstream Democrats always propose the compromise and then that gets labeled the extreme (see e.g. Obamacare). One argument for the abolition of ICE is that there are already police forces, but why should local police enforce federal immigration laws? They shouldn’t interfere, but they don’t have to actually round up illegals. |

As a hiker, I personally know numerous places where it is very easy to cross the border. It would be prohibitively expensive to actually stop all people from crossing there. But the ICE function insures that just because you've crossed the border doesn't mean you won't be apprehended a few miles in. And that keeps people from crossing. |
