Very very sad, as self driving vehicles obviously are not the sufficiently matured technology it’s makers claim it is. This is totally upon those who pushed this out way too soon.

Back to the lab with this. Reboot and repent. You're responsible.

It was only a matter of time until this happened. Now they'll all be humble and take it "very seriously." They'll come back in a while and say "we know we told you this was really safe, and now we're telling you this is really REALLY safe.

Self driving cars have along way to go. Reboot and repent, I agree.

The news reports I'm seeing suggest that the victim just walked out into traffic, that the car was going 40 in a 45, and that the human in the driver's seat saw it happen and had no time to step on the brake.

If all of that turns out to be true, this incident doesn't actually reflect badly on self-driving cars.

What I would expect more of is self-driving cars pulling off to the side of the road and telling their passenger, I'm sorry, I don't know how to proceed.

the car was going 40 in a 45

40 to 45 mph is not a safe speed in an environment where there are likely to be pedestrians.

That is the fault of the jurisdiction, not of self-driving car technology.

Only humans would know that. Speed limits get posted, it's a procedure to get them changed, unless or until the municipality gets called into court about it.

In addition, this does not strike me as an unreasonable environment for a speed limit of 45.

this does not strike me as an unreasonable environment for a speed limit of 45.

If you go into StreetView and back up a 100 feet, there's a sign "Begin Right Turn Lane Yield To Bikes".

If the collision occurred at the red circle in the times article, it occurred in the right turn lane. There's a blue (appears green on some views) direction sign attached to a lamp post on one side that obscures the line of sight from the car to somebody walking behind it to cross the street. Naturally, the sign is in front of a paved walking path.

Roadway doubles in width from 30 to 60 ft to accommodate 2 left turn lanes and 1 right turn lane. If vision system did see pedestrian, it could conclude pedestrian was on sidewalk because it was too early to see sidewalk move to right to make room for right turn traffic lane.

The human in the driver's seat was probably waiting for the car to react....that's why it was too late for him/her to stop the car.

Triple failure

The pedestrian isn't paying attention, the car attendant isn't paying attention, and the car software seems not to have done its job.

Why didn't the car detect the pedestrian in time to at least slam on the brakes for 2 seconds?

The human put too much faith in the machine. The pedestrian assumed a human would see and avoid her. The machine was programmed with too few assumptions.

the car attendant isn't paying attention

Then what's the purpose of having an attendant behind the wheel if they aren't paying attention ?
