New 96% Efficient Gas Furnaces

Posted by TransitChuckG on Wed Jan 3 10:33:00 2018

They are so efficient , that the condensed water vapor and Co2 gas it exhausts cannot be forced up your existing chimney , but through plastic PVC pipe to the exterior of your house. The intake air for the furnace combustion comes in through a PVC pipe from the exterior to your furnace. Exhaust gas /water vapor is forced out the exhaust pipe, and the condensed water vapor drains back into a section of your furnace that leads to a condensate pump. Your condensate pump, pumps it outside like it does for your central A/C.
Running the condensate outside your house in the winter in subfreezing temperatures is a bad idea.
I woke up yesterday to no heat, my fancy new thermostat was dead. I was lucky and my installing plumber came at 9:00AM. My condensate drain line was frozen outside the house, so my pump tried to pump and could not. This shuts off your thermostat and thats why I had no heat.

He re-routed the tubing to my utility sink and it drains there now. He primed the pump, and it ran, my thermostat rebooted and I had heat.

Just aheads up to everybody, if you have this type of system. Find a better pace than outside to drain that line.

How many BTUs per hour?

I ask because our small building system is way overpowered, and when our 25 year old system starts to leak, I'm wondering whether we are anywhere near your size.

What do you mean by 96% efficient? Can't be heat efficiency.

I had an 85 before, now I have a 96. So instead of losing 15% of my combustible gases to the exhaust, I’m only losing 4%.

OK, so it's the EER number.

Can't be heat efficiency.

Why not?

I have a new Central Air unit, my old one was rated at 13 SEER, this new one is 16.
My old units were 28 years old and had leaks all over the place so I bit the bullet and got the new stuff.

Specs.

My furnace is an 80,000 MBTU/hr. The Amana Model number is AMVC960804CN. I live in a 3- bedroom Bi-level dwelling, 1,250 sq. ft. upstairs, and a 500 sq. ft. heated lower floor. The rest of the lower floor is an unheated 2 car garage.

I hope this helps you.

Heh. Our building has about 5 times the area and 5 times the BTUs.

Thanks.

Do they have hydroheat up there?

I'm in a region where most of the the heaters is done via the hot water heater. Never seen one prior, but I think it's great. It creates some humidity. I always hated how dry the air is with regular heaters. I bought a humidifier once, noticed it helps retain heat like tropical environments do.
A nifty combination.

Isn't there a slop sink in there to drain it?
