New 96% Efficient Gas Furnaces

Posted by TransitChuckG on Wed Jan 3 10:33:00 2018

They are so efficient , that the condensed water vapor and Co2 gas it exhausts cannot be forced up your existing chimney , but through plastic PVC pipe to the exterior of your house. The intake air for the furnace combustion comes in through a PVC pipe from the exterior to your furnace. Exhaust gas /water vapor is forced out the exhaust pipe, and the condensed water vapor drains back into a section of your furnace that leads to a condensate pump. Your condensate pump, pumps it outside like it does for your central A/C.
Running the condensate outside your house in the winter in subfreezing temperatures is a bad idea.
I woke up yesterday to no heat, my fancy new thermostat was dead. I was lucky and my installing plumber came at 9:00AM. My condensate drain line was frozen outside the house, so my pump tried to pump and could not. This shuts off your thermostat and thats why I had no heat.

He re-routed the tubing to my utility sink and it drains there now. He primed the pump, and it ran, my thermostat rebooted and I had heat.

Just aheads up to everybody, if you have this type of system. Find a better pace than outside to drain that line.
