Regular police (the famous "Bobbies") in the UK have never been armed with firearms, and it's worked pretty well for them.P.S. Since the word "retarded" is generally considered offensive and unacceptable today, shouldn't terms which use a portion of that word as an insult be considered likewise? |

On older cars, there was the spark advance and retard for the spark plugs. It didn't mean you could adjust your engine's IQ.Also, the phrase "en retard" in French is a "false friend"; it means to be late. |

"Retarded" and "delinquent" both started off as words meaning "delayed" or "late". They assumed quite different meanings when used to refer to people. I guess the idea was to refer to intellectual development, in the first case, and moral development, in the second, as being delayed. Of course, that wasn't a terribly accurate description.There's nothing wrong with using "retarded" in the literal sense of saying that a spark is advanced or retarded. Likewise, we still hear about delinquent bill payment. But using "retarded" to mean intellectually impaired is frowned on today. Using it as an insult word is even uglier. So using just the second syllable and appending it to another word to form an insulting variation of it really should be seen as utterly repugnant. |

The "good old days" when you could tune an engine with a timing light, a matchbook cover (to gap the points) & a feeler gauge to gap the sparkplugs. Retarded comes in when you had to retard the spark. You'd do that by loosening the nut at the bottom of the distributer & rotating same until the timing was right. This was checked by the timing light lining up with the chalkmark on the flywheel. All that lines up, then its off to the "Connecting Highway"to make some $$$. |
