Sears Canada Closing All Stores Beginning October 19

Posted by northshore on Mon Oct 16 20:21:43 2017

Sears Canada will be closing all stores starting October 19. Sears has been in Canada for 65 years.

Kind of a sudden decision, with the Christmas season coming up and all that. Is on line shopping in Canada having that much of an effect to make such a radical move? I wonder how many stores are involved??

Sears is a zombie at this point. Going to their stores is highly depressing.

I dont think Trudeau had ANYTHING to do with this decision. Sears has been on the deathbed for years and should've been long dead.

Olog loves to stick politics in places where it didn't belong. To him the left is the reason for everything bad in the world. It's his worst and most predictable trait. Doesn't understand anything else.

Problem is all the retailers are taking hits a/c online inroads. Macys, Gander Mtn. J.C. Pennys etc. etc. closing stores left and right. If this was unique to Sears, you'd have a point. But its all over. Shopping malls with their big anchor stores are going the route of AM radio, dying a slow death if you'll allow a half assed analogy

Your examples are all stores that failed to adopt to the times. Sears and Kmart were notorious for starting late to the online game. Stores that adapted have done well like walmart, and best buy.

Canadian malls aren't as bad off when compared to their US equivalents given the higher prices of online competition, but Sears has generally been regarded as a dead chain up there for nearly the same time that it's been seen as a dead chain in the US.

My friends and I went to the one in Exton, Pa. in the Exton(dying) Mall, in Aug/2016. The store , as we walked through it, was almost void of shoppers. We bought a dishwasher for me and I am very happy with it. Sears is pushing their appliance home rapid "blue" team business to keep folks interested in Sears. When I drive by Exton Mall, I see maybe 20 cars in the parking lot of Sears. Their auto repair store closed up shop last year on the Exton Mall property.

I guess it's a downward spiral.

Yeah and its their own doing, I remember in the 90s the sears catalogue was THE BOOK to get. They should've been leaders in the game when it comes to the transition to the internet but they sat back and when they made the jump it was too late.

11 of them were once Eaton's, once a great nationwide chain, much better than Sears was.

They're mostly empty, and if anyone is around, they are part-timers.
Sears Canada and Sears/Kmart in the US are actually unrelated now. Doesn't matter. Ours is expected by Wall Street to collapse in 2018. JCP will not be far behind.

Sears has been slowly dying since the 1990's. Amazing it has lingered this long. Too bad the Canadian one took down Eaton's in the process.

There are a hell of a lot of You Tube files on abandoned malls. All it takes is the anchor store or two to go, and the rest fall like dominoes. 20% are expected to be gone within 5 years, even those built in the 1980's and 90's.

Wait until Amazon changes the costs structure and buying procedures of Whole Paycheck. That will mean a lot of supermarkets will close as well with competitive cost pressures in that industry. That means a lot of suburban sprawl strip malls will perish as well.

I don't think that Whole Paycheck's reconfiguration under Amazon will amount to that greta a shakeup in grocery marketing. WF is not a mass market retailers, there are no mass market national chains, at best they're regional (there's no Krogers in Vermont that I know of, for example). As I am a coop member, I'm far more concerned for their survival than Price Chopper's as an outcome from this.

A generation fom now, the landscape will likely be different. For the medium-long view, mass market supermarkets will survive. Also don't forget that retail food is a very different business than dry goods.
