NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll: Majority of Americans want Confederate statues to remain in place

Poll finds majority of Americans want Confederate statues to remain

Posted 4:32 PM, August 17, 2017, by CNN Wire and Web Staff
Updated at 04:41PM, August 17, 2017
A majority of Americans polled in an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll believe that statues of honoring leaders of the Confederacy should remain as a historical symbol.

Of the 1,125 adults surveyed, 62% believe they should remain, 27% believe they should be removed because they are offensive and 11% are unsure.

In that poll, a majority of Americans said they disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of the situation in Charlottesville, Virginia. Fifty-two percent didn’t feel Trump’s response to the violence was strong enough, 21% were unsure, and 27% felt it was strong enough.

A separate survey released Thursday found the same sentiment echoed among those polled, and a majority also believes Trump’s policies have done more to encourage racial division than racial unity,

A CBS News survey found the majority of Americans polled (55%) said they disapproved of the President’s response to the deadly violence that occurred at a white supremacist rally over the weekend, while most Republicans approved (67%). Just 10% of Democrats said they approved.

Interviewing for this poll began the night before Trump’s stunning news conference on Tuesday and continued for two nights after it.

Disapproval of the President’s handling of events rose following the news conference in which he blamed the violence in Charlottesville on aggressors on both sides of the conflict — equating the white supremacists on one side with the “alt-left” on the other side — after his top White House aides spent days trying to clean up after Trump’s initial vague response.

After Tuesday afternoon, views on the President’s description of events were tightly tied to overall views of his handling of the matter.

Independents and Democrats, and the country overall, said they felt the President’s description of blame in the events is inaccurate; Republicans said they felt it is accurate.

Overall, the poll noted that Americans are more apt to say Trump’s policies have encouraged racial division (44%) rather than racial unity (12%). Thirty-nine percent said his policies have had not much effect on the matter.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans said they considered the attack that led to a death in Charlottesville an act of “domestic terrorism,” a view that spanned partisan lines.

In additional polling data released Thursday, the CBS poll found that most Americans (59%) said the US should not threaten North Korea with military action right now but most would approve of military action if diplomacy does not eventually stop its nuclear program.

Polling numbers indicated that the public remains uneasy about Trump’s ability to handle the North Korea situation — 59% said they are uneasy about his ability to do so, while 38% said they have confidence.

The CBS News survey was conducted from August 14-16, polling 1,223 adults nationwide with a margin of error of ±4 percentage points.

Hmmm. Do you see statues of Benedict Arnold anywhere in the United States? He won many great battles early in the Revolution, before betraying his country.

The entire Confederacy, was an act of treason against the United States, and all of its leaders, civilian and military, were traitors. The was was fought over whether the South, as a matter of life and law, would be able to continue owning human beings. That in itself is so horrifically evil, that there should never have been a single statue, not the smallest monument of any kind, erected in honor of these disgusting individuals who fought to defend the indefensible.

The statues and monuments that do exist, erected long after the war was over, not to "honor Southern culture", but to remind Black people living under Jim Crow, who was in charge. Imagine being a Black defendant entering a Southern courthouse with a statue of Robert E. Lee on its front lawn...he or she would correctly feel their chances were not good.

THIS is what you are supporting.

But that's comparing apples to oranges. The Electoral College is really the people and they chose otherwise. California is full of illegal alien sympathizers, and they would have ones that voted for Clinton to put her ahead. Just look at the red versus blue Maps and you'll see 95% of the country wanted Donald Trump.

It was all done with a wink and Nod. If these politicians did not want those buttons being circulated, whether or not their campaign made them all they officially endorsed them, they would not be as prevalent as they were. Which is what makes Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee different from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson even though they were all racists and owned slaves.

Because liberty and equality are an aberration, the foundation of the United States of America is the greatest gift to humanity of all time. The other free countries of the world owe their existence to that seminal event of our history. Even if the people who brought forth on this world our nation did things that weren't exactly honorable, they did this one thing that was so profoundly great that they deserve our eternal reverence. What did Davis and Lee do? Nothing. They tried to destroy this great gift to humanity. We can judge Robert E. Lee based on his flaws because nothing that he achieved or attempted to achieve would have been a source of greatness.
