Brentwood: MS13 gang members charged in murders of teen girls

Posted by LuchAAA on Thu Mar 2 20:49:48 2017

I believe this is the first big Brentwood story since Trump.

He has nothing to do with this but it will be interesting to see if crime varies in Central American communities in the US during Trump.

Thread participation will be minimal. I don't know why, but people who post here don't like to speak about Brentwood and it's surrounding communities.

I live there. There's nothing to speak about. It's suburban bland - I'd rather be living in Queens.

The gang stuff is limited to those who have some kindn of connection or cotact with those individuals. The ordinary person would not see or be directly involved with that stuff.

One very postive thing - Brentwood has a GREAT public library!! :)

I live there

Since when?

There's nothing to speak about. It's suburban bland - I'd rather be living in Queens.

Salvadorans have made it suburbia with an "urban" twist.

The gang stuff is limited to those who have some kindn of connection or cotact with those individuals. The ordinary person would not see or be directly involved with that stuff.

Really? The black girl in this story was not in a gang. And do note, because she was savagely beaten by minorities, you won't see #blm or Beyonce or The Reverend Al Sharpton getting in on it.

Years ago I started posting these stories. There was the incident at the basketball court where a young male was killed and that is still unsolved. The kid had no gang affiliation. It is believed gang members killed him. Of course MS13 kills "civilians" too. Not all of their victims are their own.

Well, be safe in Brentwood, and thanks for threadparticipating where AlM, GP38, JayZeeBMT, SUBWAYMAN, ftgreeneg, dand124, claro, AEM, Amanda, KGT, all won't say a word about this.

Oh, I commend Univision 41 for covering this story too.

Actually just saw the story on the news said they killed the latino girl bc of some stupid 'beef' and the black girl got killed just for being with the other girl. Tragic how lives are lost over petty stupidity.

I moved there 1st week of November 2015.

I've seen a couple of Salvadoran grocery stores and thats about it.
Large new supermarket (formerly shopright) on 5th ave. & Suffolk ave. has a large Spanish food section.

been trying to find out if there is a music scene there, musicians either jamming or performing, was told by an employee at Compare, that if I wanted more infomration, I should check at a barbershop between Brentwood Road & 5th ave. Haven't done that yet. It's on my list.

yes, it is tragic.

Think about it.

A BLACK FEMALE beaten to death on a suburban street in NYC by Salvadorans, and this will be out of the news by Friday.

Now, if she died under other circumstances, you'd have #blm, Beyonce, and a big social media campaign going. America would know her.

But the ingredients for sensationalism aren't there.

Well, be careful.

If you are black, Salvadorans hate blacks. Be aware of that.

Salvadorans are totally different from other Latino groups. Just look at what they did to that hippo in San Salvador.

When you exit the SSP in Brentwood/N. Bay Shore, you see signs for criminal defense lawyers, immigration lawyers, a Pentecostal clothing store, and of course, POLLO CAMPERO.

I have friends in Brentwood who send my a Christmas card every year. You have no idea how much I look forward to that card from Brentwood.

thousands of houses on mostly 1/3 acre plots built after ww two in areas surrounding the original community grouped around the train station which originally occupied by mostly locally employed irish and italian families up until early 70's.

families raised, second generatons largely abandonded the area, moved south. large local area employers (state hospitals, entenmans bakery, grumman, republic etc.) closed or reduced workforces. majority of people moving into the houses vacated by the departed irish and italians were hispanic. and a large percentage of the formerly single family houses were subdivided into "apartments".

that's brentwood today.

i grew up on the central islip side right at the "border" of brentwood. the c.i. side, since it was only two blocks in and then there was the grounds of the central islip state mental hospital, (hundreds of acres of really cool mixture of semi-abandonded institutional brick buildings, scattered woods and fallow fields, forlorn apple groves bearing gnarly insane green apples, crazy (to us kids) guys wandering around and doing weird spooky shit), was more rural looking with empty lots and woods where kids built forts and whatnot.

..like, until i was a teenager there was a large commercial chicken coops set up with hundreds of birds directly across the street.

(the sounds {phew!} and the smells of those freeking chickens, the car racing sounds coming from islip speedway, only about ten blocks away, on the weekends, whistles of trains passing by on the montauk branch and the main line, occasional inexplicable screetch coming out of the dark hospital grounds woods...these were the sounds of my summers.)

but the brentwood side which
had newer homes and curbs and actual sidewalks! always seemed to me to be a "higher class" neighborhood than the c.i. side.

Actually your 100% wrong in your reasoning. There's a HUGE obvious difference in this case and those BLM cases. The BLM case with cops there's the sense that the officer will get away with it not be convicted. With Trayvon Martin Zimmerman intially wasn't even charged and ultimately he got away with it. In this case there's no doubt when the killers are caught they will be charged and going to prison. THATS THE DIFFERENCE.

The problem with BLM is that they stand behind criminals who are killed or injured in the act of perpetrating further crimes at the time. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. They should save the "outrage" for REAL innocents, not thugs who lived fast and died young because of their lifestyle.

Travyon was not killed by police. Tamir Rice, on the other hand, DID play stupid games when he decided to point the gun at passerby's heads as shown in the video. John Crawford WAS HOLDING A RIFLE AND REFUSED TO PUT IT DOWN when told to by police!! Now, if YOU cannot see the stupid games he was playing, then there's no hope... Castile had the unfortunate outcome of reaching into the glove compartment AFTER specifically being told by the cop (who was Mexican-American, even though the cop's ethnicity shouldn't matter, BLM for some reason seems to make it relevant) and, in doing so, got shot.

As for the links you provided, the guy with the red shirt was confronted by an ESU-type of team, who had the time to assemble and shoot him. The second link didn't work. Tamir was shot as there was no time for an ESU type of team to respond, so the first radio car on the scene did.

Anyways, I stand by the addage, you fuck with the bull, you get the horns. It's as simple as that. Race/ethnicity have NOTHING to do with it.

'Race/ethnicity have NOTHING to do with it.'
I disagree when it comes to the level of threat a suspect is percieved to be in the eyes many (NOT ALL) cops i believe race/ethnicity ABSOLUTELY is a factor(whether it's conscious or not i don't know). I'll leave it at that bc this topic has been beat to death on this board.

I respect your viewpoint and I agree with the assertion that thus topic has been beaten to death. I will say, however, that when the police intitially get the 911 call that their dispatch gives them, the operator usually tells the police the race of the suspect they are looking for.

And it takes five reporters to write it

Violent street gang MS-13 puts Long Island towns in its grip

By Claudia Torrens, Frank Eltwood and Colleen Long
Apr 28, 2017 1:11 AM EDT
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — Late at night, when helicopters thrum overhead and spotlights beam down onto lawns, many people here know exactly what's going on.

"You just think, 'Oh, God, whose child is it now?'" said Stephanie Spezia, a longtime resident of this suburb in the heart of Long Island that is caught in the grip of a violent street gang with Central American ties, MS-13.

MS-13 has been blamed for a trail of 11 corpses of mostly young people discovered in woods and vacant lots in Brentwood and neighboring Central Islip since the start of the school year.

The bloodshed in the two blue-collar towns has gotten the attention of President Donald Trump, who says the killings are the result of lax immigration policies that let too many criminal "scum" slip through.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was set to give a speech Friday not far from a park where the bodies of four young men were found this month bearing MS-13's hallmarks: repeated slashes from a blade that left the victims nearly unrecognizable.

Some parents say they are afraid to let their children go to school. Teens say any perceived slight to a gang member, especially a refusal to join, can mean death.

After one high school warned parents not to let their kids wear anything "gang-affiliated," gang members started deciding on a daily basis what colors were off-limits, leaving students to guess what not to wear.

"Kids are losing their childhoods," said Jennifer Suarez, whose 15-year-old niece was beaten and hacked to death in the street last year. "You can see the stress on their faces as they get ready. It's like, you know, they're suiting up for battle."

So how does a street gang with ties to Central America gain such an aggressive foothold in the suburbs of Long Island?

MS-13, or the Mara Salvatrucha, is believed by federal prosecutors to have thousands of members across the U.S., primarily immigrants from Central America. It has a stronghold in Los Angeles, where it emerged in the 1980s as a neighborhood street gang.

But its true rise began after members were deported back to El Salvador in the 1990s. There, the gang thrived and spread to Honduras. MS-13 and rival groups there now control entire towns, rape girls and young women, massacre students, bus drivers and merchants who refuse to pay extortion, and kill competitors or youths who simply refuse to join.

That violence has prompted a mass migration of people trying to escape, especially children, who have streamed north because of a U.S. policy allowing people under 18 who arrive without parents to stay in the country temporarily with relatives or friends.

Since the fall of 2013, the U.S. has placed 165,000 unaccompanied minors. Long Island has been a frequent landing spot. Suffolk County, which includes Brentwood and Central Islip, has gotten 4,500. Neighboring Nassau County has received 3,800.

In a recent roundup of 13 suspected MS-13 gang members accused of murder and other charges, seven had entered as unaccompanied minors.

"There's no question that MS-13 is recruiting these unaccompanied children," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini. The youngsters "don't have an established social network, at least many of them don't, and MS-13 is providing that network."

"They're also using coercion," Sini said. "They say, 'If you don't join the gang, we will kill you.'"

All told, nearly 200 suspected MS-13 members have been rounded up since September. Among the tactics Sini has employed have been stepped-up patrols, renewed cooperation with an FBI task force and helicopter sweeps of wooded areas where gang members have been known to gather.

Trump has promised to eradicate the gang in the U.S. through strict enforcement of immigration law.

"We are putting MS-13 in jail and getting them the hell out of our country," he told The Associated Press this week. "They are a bad group, and somebody said they are as bad as al-Qaida, which is a hell of a reference. … We are out in Long Island cleaning out the MS-13 scum."

The tough talk has made some residents fearful of law enforcement as well of the gang. They say it's not about immigration politics but about making a community safer.

Residents of Brentwood and Central Islip, with a combined population of about 100,000, say the area of modest ranch homes, warehouses and strip malls has always been a diverse, welcoming place for immigrants trying to make better lives for their children.

Some longtime residents say law enforcement bears some of the responsibility for the gang's rise because it ignored the burgeoning problem for years.

Parents say 4,200-student Brentwood High School lacks the means to help young people who are often left alone after school because their parents work long hours. There are few social workers and guidance counselors, they say, and not enough security guards or cameras.

"They can't walk the halls without fear," said Evelyn Rodriguez, the mother of 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas, who was found beaten to death last fall. Rodriguez said her daughter had been bullied for two years.

In the months leading up to her death, Kayla was involved in a series of disputes with members and associates of the MS-13, prosecutors said. Rodriguez said her daughter stood her ground and ended up dead.

Kayla and her lifelong friend Nisa Mickens, 15, were walking on a street near their homes when men with baseball bats and a machete jumped out and attacked them.

Nisa was found dead on a residential tree-lined street a day before her 16th birthday. After a day of searching, Kayla was discovered in a wooded backyard nearby. She lived a block away.

"People, they missed the opportunity to know a really great person," said Nisa's father, Rob Mickens, who is running for the school board to help push for change. "They would have loved to know her."

Bertha Ullaguari said she noticed her 18-year-old son, Jorge Tigre, going from a good student on track to graduate from Bellport High to someone who was too afraid to go to school.

Then she got two truancy letters. When she pressed her son, he refused to tell her what was going on.

"Some bad things happened there," Ullaguari said, her voice trembling. She had heard he had his tires slashed. There were rumors of gangs.

And then, about two weeks ago while she was driving with her daughter, they got a mysterious call. A girl on the line said Jorge was dead along with three others in a park 20 miles from his home.

"We nearly killed ourselves from the shock," said Ullaguari, who is an Ecuadorean immigrant.

Jorge's body and the three others were found cut, their torsos exposed and hands bound, just steps from a playground.

"It could happen to anybody's child, anywhere," Evelyn Rodriguez said. "We all need to be aware of this, and we need stand together. Because I don't want it to be your child."

Associated Press Writers Sara Walsh and Michael Balsamo in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Newsday has the story.

About 100 protest Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ visit

Updated April 28, 2017 1:37 PM
By Nicole Fuller and David Olson
About 100 people gathered outside the Central Islip federal courthouse Friday morning to demonstrate against the attorney general’s visit, sending the message that “immigrants are welcome here.”

The demonstrators gathered about two hours before Attorney General Jeff Sessions addressed law enforcement officials during a stop in the same community where the bodies of four young men were found in a park just over two weeks ago — the latest violent incident in Central Islip and Brentwood to be investigated as a possible gang-related killing.

In his speech, Sessions said the government’s mission is “to demolish” MS-13, the group authorities say are responsible for a series of savage slayings here.

Sessions laid out elements of the government’s battle plan against the gang, and defended the president’s immigration policy as one that ensures immigrants come to the country legally.

Before Sessions spoke, the demonstrators chanted “Sessions go home” and “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.”

Suffolk police officers from the department’s Community Oriented Police Enforcement Unit supervised the peaceful crowd gathered at Spur Drive North and Eastview Drive.

The Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, pastor of the famed Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and the longtime president of SUNY Old Westbury, was among the demonstrators.

“We are here because we do not believe that Jefferson Beauregard Sessions is the man who can actually speak to the violence that is affecting so many of our communities,” Butts said. “We think his insensitivity, his racism, his bigotry — all of that excludes him from being able to hear what the real needs are.”

Butts also emphasized that Sessions “needs to speak to the people who are directly impacted by this violence.”

Sessions was scheduled to meet privately with crime victims during his stop on Long Island.

“He needs to talk, not just to the parents of those who were killed, but he needs to talk to all the people because this violence issue, coupled with the immigration issue, is a very complex one, and you cannot deal with that just simply with one aspect of our community, with the police or law enforcement,” Butts said.

Authorities set up a penned-off area for a handful of counter-protesters who supported Sessions.

Vincent Rasulo of East Patchogue carried a large yellow “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.

“I’m here to support the attorney general in his message to fight MS-13,” said Rasulo, a member of the Brookhaven Republican Party committee. “Anything he can do to come in here and solve this problem, I’m in favor of 100 percent.”

Of the demonstrators protesting against Sessions, he said: “I totally support them being here. I just don’t agree with what they are saying.”

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), who introduced Sessions before the attorney general’s speech, said it was “disgraceful” that people were protesting Sessions’ visit, adding that they should be “on their knees” thanking him.

Shortly after the speech only a half dozen demonstrators remained as police took down the barricades. The final two counter-demonstrators chatted amicably with their opposition as they all left.

Earlier, Gabriela Castillo, coordinator of the protest and of the Long Island Civic Engagement Table, which promotes civic participation among communities of color, said Sessions was not at the courthouse to help make Brentwood and Central Islip safer.

“I don’t think this has anything to do with public safety,” she said. “I think this is a convenient opportunity for him to make political talking points and to promote an anti-immigrant agenda that has been promoted by this administration from the beginning.”

Sessions and President Donald Trump have blamed what Trump called the Obama administration’s “weak illegal immigration policies” for MS-13 violence. Defenders of Obama said he focused deportation efforts on violent criminals, including gang members.

“Our community needs healing and an effective solution to the challenges we’re facing in this area,” Castillo said. “Sessions is coming here to further fan the flames and tension. Promoting an anti-immigrant agenda will not solve these issues or help the community in any way, shape or form.”

About 10 Catholic nuns from the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood were at the protest.

Sister Catherine Fitzgibbon said she and the other sisters are at the demonstration in part to represent immigrants in the country illegally who fear participating in such a high-profile protest.

“They’re afraid they’re going to be picked up and be deported,” she said, “I think it’s important to see this is not an immigration issue. It’s a tragedy and an issue of gangs.”

Fitzgibbon said teenagers join gangs because they’re looking for self-acceptance, but anti-illegal immigration crackdowns deter young people from joining programs that would help them resist and avoid gangs.

“We are showing up to change the narrative,” Sister Rosalie Carven said. “Their narrative is immigrants are takers, not givers, that they don’t contribute to society.”

Around her, demonstrators shouted, “Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here” and “Say it loud, say it clear, Sessions you’re not welcome here.”

Sister Jane Reilly said Suffolk County police in the Brentwood area and local residents have slowly been building up trust with each other. She said Sessions and others tying the killings in the area to immigration policies may destroy that fragile trust and deter residents from cooperating with the police.

Brentwood should only be an OTchat topic.

Politicians are exploiting something that has been a hot topic on this message board for close to a decade.

i heard that Hispanic activist groups were meeting with Suffolk PD to make sure that they don't "profile" in their attempts to crack down on the violence.

LOL!! The bodies of those kids were still warm when activists were already giving Suffolk PD a hard time.

"MS-13 has been blamed for a trail of 11 corpses of mostly young people discovered in woods"

That's everyday in Mexico. Citizens have neighborhood groups just trying to find all of the mass graves in their neighborhoods. It's not that they have trouble finding them, its that they have trouble finding the people they are actually looking for!

I guess it's a good thing NYC is a sanctuary city full of wonderful assimilation.

I don't know why all of a sudden the AP wants to report on it, except to put the words "scum" in quotes.

the bodies are all minorities too.

If the suspecs were white, it would be a big story.

Honestly, as long as MS-13 does not turn it's attention to white people, it's all good. Why? Because this is the America Hillary voters want to live in. That's just common sense.

well that's ok.

There are a lot of other topics to discuss this weekend.

I'm claiming v1ctory in the Brentwood thread wars anyway.

If you remember, Amanda, KGT, and one of the AEM's posted a photo from Brentwood, mocking the murder rate out there. They think it's funny.

I can't remember if they find the mass graves daily, or if it's several times a week. But the citizen groups go out with their equipment daily in search.
The amount of bodies recovered versus the amount of people still missing is a very poor ratio.

But hey, the NY mayor thinks the dreamers should be able to DUI and it's not as serious!
