No, but I respect their right to be proud of their heritage.

Sounds like something to be really proud of.

The first monument, which honors members of a white supremacist paramilitary group who fought against the city's racially integrated, Reconstruction-era police force in 1874, was dismantled and removed before the sun rose Monday.

I was going to write a post comparing it to the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union existed for 74 years* and did other things that people could be proud of, like defeating the Nazis and sending the first man to space. The Confederacy, in its barely four years of existence did nothing but prosecute the Civil War and perpetuate slavery. There are no great Confederate achievements outside the Civil War battlefield.

*Technically the "Soviet Union" existed for 69 years.

Yep. Employing all those workers in baby carriage factories.

(The wife of a man working in a baby carriage factory gives birth to a baby. They don't have much money so the man decides to steal enough parts from the factory to make a baby carriage. But it just doesn't work. No matter how hard he tries, every time he assembles the parts they turn out as a machine gun.)

Maybe here's the question for the CMMs of this world (though no point my asking him because I'll just get another tube of toothpaste).

Which would you rather be: a black on a plantation in South Carolina in 1850 or a Jew in Berlin in 1938?

The fact that there's no automatic obvious answer proves that the comparison between the Confederacy and Nazi Germany isn't that absurd.

From a lifelong New Orleans resident

I've been trying my hardest to hold back my opinion, but the pettiness of those opposed to it has grind my gears. The first monument removed honored the Crescent City White League, who erected it in celebration of a failed toppling the post-Civil War biracial city government. The second statue to be removed had an inscription added in 1932 that stated the Yankees withdrew federal troops and "recognized white supremacy in the South". Other states honored confederate generals and presidents.

These statues must be removed and placed in museums, we should not be supporting traitors and racists openly.

They did keep a few, with proper context applied.

A better example would be the elimination of all things Stalin once it was revealed to the people that he was a grade A asshole, who's name should be right there alongside Mussolini and a certain former German leader...
