Trump fails to mention Jews in Holocaust remembrance statement

In a departure from predecessors on both sides of the political aisle, President Trump’s statement Friday marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day did not mention the deaths of six million Jews — a lapse the head of the Anti-Defamation League called “puzzling and troubling.”

In the three-paragraph statement Friday, Trump said: “It is with a heavy heart and somber mind that we remember and honor the victims, survivors, heroes of the Holocaust. It is impossible to fully fathom the depravity and horror inflicted on innocent people by Nazi terror.”

“Yet, we know that in the darkest hours of humanity, light shines the brightest.‎ As we remember those who died, we are deeply grateful to those who risked their lives to save the innocent,” he continued, again referring only to “the innocent.”

“In the name of the perished, I pledge to do everything in my power throughout my Presidency, and my life, to ensure that the forces of evil never again defeat the powers of good,” he concluded. “Together, we will make love and tolerance prevalent throughout the world.”

The White House statement with Trump’s remarks “misses that it was six million Jews who perished, not just ‘innocent people,’” tweeted Jonathan Greenblatt, national director of the ADL shortly after the comments were released.

“Puzzling and troubling” that it “has no mention of Jews,” Greenblatt added in a follow up tweet.

Greenblatt noted that both Republican and Democratic presidents — including all of Obama’s statements on the occasion — always clearly highlighted the centrality of the genocide of the Jewish people on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by the United Nations in 2005 to commemorate the deaths of the six million Jews as well as an estimated two million Roma and thousands of disabled and gay people at the hands of the Nazis.

A separate Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by Israel in the 1950s to mark the Jewish losses in particular, which are also traditionally marked by a presidential proclamation.

Trump's generic phrasing contrasts considerably with Obama’s fuller statements on the occasion, which always spoke about the sufferings of the Jewish people, even though Trump has consistently portrayed Obama as a foe of the Jews and Israel.

The failure of the White House to mention the distinctive Jewish losses in the Holocaust could be problematic given that Trump has been accused of trafficking in anti-Semitic stereotypes and his campaign has been accused of employing anti-Semitic tropes. He has also been criticized for failing to call out virulent anti-Semitism among some of his supporters.

The "refuses" would indicate he ran a draft of the speech past Kushner. Otherwise I would attribute the action to total lack of interest in Jews on the part of anyone else on his staff.

Yes, I responded to the subject line. What's wrong with that? I'm suggesting the subject line isn't necessarily correct.

And I effectively said that in my opinion, the only Trump adviser who has any interest in Jews or Judaism is Kushner. Feel free to disagree by pointing to another Trump adviser who you feel has any interest in Jews or Judaism.

Since you didn't trouble yourself to even read the article you responded to, I wonder how much your comment deals with the perceived insult to Jews, but to hatred for Trump.

When SMAZ gets on that bandwagon, and doubles down to substituting "refuses" for "failed" I resent his disrespect to Jews by trying to dictate how I should regard Trump or Obama or anyone else based on his personal politics.

I don't agree with Pigs either, but at least I believe he understands the issue.

Are you sure it was a snub? Does anyone not know what the day remembers?

Obama always mentioned Jews on this occasion but he spent his presidency trying to reign in Israel and, when he would no longer pay a political price, delivered them to their enemies at the UN.

Rhetoric over substance. I worry more over the Holocaust to come than words about the Holocaust that was.

6 million Jews did die, but they make up only about half the victims of the concentration camps. Slavics, Gypsies, gays and basically anyone else they didn't like died at their hands as well. Why must we emphasize one half and ignore the other half?

Perhaps a better way to have worded the subject line might have been,
"Donald Trump Does Not Mention Jews ... "

That would leave it open to further questions as to why Jews were not mentioned in the speech.

He already has Jews in prominent places in his government. One of his closest advisers is a Jew. His daughter is Jewish and is raising her children as Jews.

So now we're expected to believe that Trump hates Jews?

Don't you think that there are other sectors of society who think that Trump is already beholden to Jews?

Part of the difficulty with the numbers is that many people were murdered outside of concentration or extermination camps. There is also the question of what is a murder and what is a civilian casualty of war.

What's clear is that Jews were singled out for systematic killing (so were gypsies, but there were far fewer gypsies than Jews). In contrast, murders of other groups, like Polish Catholics, were more random in nature. And when it comes to POWs, it's hard to say when insufficient food or shelter (the indirect cause of most POW deaths) becomes so deliberate it becomes murder.
