Part of the difficulty with the numbers is that many people were murdered outside of concentration or extermination camps. There is also the question of what is a murder and what is a civilian casualty of war.What's clear is that Jews were singled out for systematic killing (so were gypsies, but there were far fewer gypsies than Jews). In contrast, murders of other groups, like Polish Catholics, were more random in nature. And when it comes to POWs, it's hard to say when insufficient food or shelter (the indirect cause of most POW deaths) becomes so deliberate it becomes murder. |
