Uber question

Posted by Dave on Thu Sep 22 22:09:00 2016

My wife is traveling next week and will be using Uber for the first time (I've never used them). She packing a large suitcase (needs to be checked on the plane) and she uses a cane. Will UberX drivers lift her bag and put it into the trunk of their car for her?

This is a non-answer, but how could a car service possibly be competitive if they didn't perform such a basic service?

My brother is an Uber driver. They're not required to lift any baggage into the trunk. But as part of the service, you're asked to rate the driver after the ride. If the drivers want a high rating, they'll likely help.

Thanks, Amanda. Since my wife can't take the chance the driver won't put her suitcase in the trunk, I'll recommend she take a taxi.

And there's no way to request a driver that will agree to put luggage into the trunk? I'm quite surprised that hasn't become very public knowledge.

I have never had a Uber driver not offer to put suitcase in the trunk. In addition to rating, they are likely to do it because if you give a cash tip they can keep 100% of it.

You can call the driver immediately after the request is accepted and ask. Unless the driver also has difficulty lifting, I can't imagine any driver refusing to help.

They're certainly not required to do so, but when a driver accepts her ride request... I'd suggest calling the driver to ask if he'll do this. I think most will do it the interest of getting a good rating , and maybe the chance of a cash tip. If the driver declines... I'd say she should cancel the ride (if the driver won't), and explain to Uber why, and they'll probably credit her the cancelation fee. I really htink a driver refusing to do it would be a rarity.

We've already had this discussion with you. A car service is what you call when you need a car to take you somewhere.

OK, every where else, including here in Chicago. you can either hail a cab on the street, or call for one on the phone. New York seems to be the only place where you can hail a cab on the street, but they do not take phone calls, and the car services are the opposite, where you cannot hail one on the street, but call for them on the phone.

Yes. Both services exist but only in New York are they separate.

Except for the green cabs. They can do both.

I used Uber three times with a large suitcase this past week, and all three drivers exited the car without hesitation and placed my suitcase into and out of the car for me.

Possibly varies by city. Do NYers tip uber drivers?

I've only once had a large bag when using uber and the driver remained seated. But I recently had a cab driver do the same thing which seemed very strange.

I suppose I should mention these Uber trips were all in Las Vegas.

Tipping is usually not necessary with Uber, but is always an option. I've never personally tipped here in New York.
