However, true liberty is hard. You need to be willing to stay true to oneself, and that isn't easy, so the next guy can do the same. So many are compelled to interfere. That needs to end.School vouchers are no solution. As a taxpayer, I want to see my tax money go into the public system to provide all kids an equally excellent education to enable them to succeed as adults, and one free of the divisions and complusions to interfere in the lives of others openly taught in many private institutions. |

There aren't enough private schools to handle all the kids. Vouchers starve the public school system, which is where our tax money should be going. If a parent wants to put their kid in a private school, it's their choice. |

Obviously the existence of vouchers wouldn't increase the supply in response to demand. It doesn't "starve" the public school system. Public schools would have fewer students. |

Public schools would have fewer students.Public schools are built to handle a projected number of students. If you set up a system to serve 1,000 students, and suddenly 30% of your students and 30% of your funding disappear, you can't immediately adjust. There are major transition costs to reducing the size of the public school system. There are also major ongoing costs in having a public school system that has fluctuating enrollment depending on the popularity of the charter schools. So RFACBB. |

Add to that private schools can pick and choose students, so the difficult cases end up in the financially starved public system, which no longer has the resources needed to handle general population students, much less special needs. We're already seeing this problem with charter schools. |

As a result, private schools will take the students who require less spending per pupil leaving the school district with less money to educate those with the most needs. Put it differently, a school district has 2 students and pays $20,000 total to educate them (Student 1 requires $5,000 in services, Student 2 requires $15,000). As proposed, if either student wants to use a voucher that student's family would receive $10,000. Private Schools won't want Student 2 because they would be losing money but they will happily take Student 1. Now, School District has $10,000 for the student requiring $15,000.2) There are certain fixed costs for items such as labor, facilities, etc. that cannot be adjusted easily if demand fluctuates. 3) There are two lines of case law that are contradictory on whether vouchers can be used for private schools affiliated with a religion. On one hand, these private schools cannot be discriminated against just for being affiliated with a religion, but there is also case law against the funding of religious education. Even if schools only use voucher funds for non-religious purposes, receiving those funds allows money that would have previously had to cover religious and non-religious purposes to be used exclusively for religious purposes. |
