EU Screwing up Brexit already |
|
Posted by AlM on Sat Jun 25 17:19:24 2016 Olog will be happy.Link President of European Commission wants Britain to send in its withdrawal application right away. French foreign minister says Britain needs to designate a new Prime Minister, which will certainly take several days. Um, no. It takes quite a while to elect a new Conservative Party leader in any case. And getting a majority of Parliament to approve a Brexit declaration may require an awful lot of work, given that a majority of Parliament opposes Brexit. |

It's what happens when a powerful bureaucracy doesn't get it's way. They're trying to make blustering declarations since they can't exert unquestioned power any more.Didn't work for the Wizard of Oz either. |

The whole point of the EU was to create a "United States of Europe" and it's rapidly turning into the mess we have here. I always thought that a united Europe would be a good thing for them all, but given the morass it's turning into, they might as well let the last person out turn off the lights. All it seems to have turned into is the "Banker republic of who can we fuck next?" :( |

So after the People of the United Kingdom have spoken, Parliament should take its sweet time in granting their verdict?Which part of "LEAVE" do these British politicians not understand? |

The British Constitution doesn't allow for enacting of laws through popular referendum. Until an Act of Parliament makes an application to the EU, there is no Brexit. And it makes sense for the Act of Parliament and subsequent negotiations to be shepherded by someone who supported the cause, not by Cameron. All of that takes months. The French Foreign Minister was just being petulant in ignoring British law. |

In the legal sense it was non-binding because British law doesn't allow for a binding referendum. But didn't Cameron commit that it would be heeded?I think there is actually a small chance that a majority of MPs will refuse to vote for Brexit and just say, OK we'll have an election, vote me out if you don't like my vote. |

The UK has parliamentary supremacy: If Parliament wanted to have a binding referendum it could. It could override said referendum after the fact, but that would require a separate act of Parliament. |

Part of what is at stake her are our cherished illusions of democracy.Don't like the referendum result? Overrule it. Don't like the primary result? Change the rules. |

Europeanists have the fantasy that you could drown out Europe's ancient hatreds and bellicosity in a bland bureaucracy. Sounds good but didn't play out.Similar theory to the UN/League of Nations. |
