Obama's Asia trip...and who REALLY won the Vietnam War |
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Mon May 23 22:09:41 2016 While the GOP makes the usual political hay out of Obama's Asia trip--he's in Ho Chi Minh City tonight--it's worth noting that they've been selling Big Macs there for two years now. It's interesting to discover that in the long run, we actually did win the conflict over Vietnam after all. American corporate brands like McDonald's are doing more and more business in Vietnam all the time. We have certainly prevailed on the economic battleground, if not on the military one. Just my $0.02. |

Chances are your sneakers and some of your clothes were made there too. Vietnam is now replacing Bangladesh because their buildings tend to stay up. |

The U.S. lost the war in many ways, if not militarily.Viet Nam won the war in the showy ways: victory parades, territory, bragging rights, Saigon becomes HCM (though many Vietnamese still say Saigon, just as many Russians continued to say "Peter" or Petersburg during the years it was Leningrad). But VN failed to heed the advice in "The Mouse That Roared." Lose the war, get American goodies, Win...? Viet Nam suffered from poverty and more for decades after they won the war. |

I was speaking rhetorically, in the context that the war was fought over the spread of Communism in Vietnam, but here we are decades late, with capitalism appearing everywhere in that country. |

I understand, but I think that speaks more to ultimate uselessness of war. That doesn't mean that war can always be avoided. The intent of the Viet Nam conflict was not only to stop the spread of Communism in Viet Nam, but in general. At the time Communism was successfully being established in a number of places (like Cuba, Africa, and the rest of Indochina), thus the "Domino Theory." In the short term, I suppose we were fortunate the Ho was a nationalist first, and a client of the Soviet Union, not China, or its might be a Chinese "protectorate" right now. |

Viet Nam won the war in the showy waysThe political and military objective of the North Vietnamese government was to conquer the South and unify the country under Communist rule. The political and military objective of the United States government was to prevent that. They achieved their objectives. We didn't. They won the war. We lost it. Period. |

That sounds right: ~41,000 in combat, over 5,000 of wounds later (any time later, either soon or with the wounds contributing to death later).More than 9,000 in accidents and 1,000 of illiness and various smaller numbers from other causes including, sadly, "self-inflicted." |
