I understand, but I think that speaks more to ultimate uselessness of war. That doesn't mean that war can always be avoided.The intent of the Viet Nam conflict was not only to stop the spread of Communism in Viet Nam, but in general. At the time Communism was successfully being established in a number of places (like Cuba, Africa, and the rest of Indochina), thus the "Domino Theory." In the short term, I suppose we were fortunate the Ho was a nationalist first, and a client of the Soviet Union, not China, or its might be a Chinese "protectorate" right now. |
