Obscure?There must be thousands of New Yorkers who go to church on this holy day and therefore are incapable of moving their cars. :) Actually, I dislike alternate side suspended days because my car is in a garage some distance away. If alternate side is in effect, I can bring my car around and get a space at 10 AM. If not, there are no real possibilities of unmetered spaces. |

It's obscure to the extent that there were so many free parking spaces on the side where parking would otherwise be disallowed that it seems likely that many people weren't aware of the holiday. I don't see that many spots on Wednesdays, or on Catholic Maundy Thursday. And this is a Catholic neighborhood. |

Until this thread, I didn't even think of the fact of what today was.As you said, it's probably completely unnecessary to suspend ASP on a day like today. It's probably only done to be "politically correct", as they do it for the Jewish holidays or other "obscure" holidays. |

It started with Jewish holy days, on which religious Jews are truly not supposed to move their cars.Then Roman Catholics demanded equal time, even though a truly religious Roman Catholic is perfectly well allowed to move their car on a holy day. And then it snowballed from there. Everything except the Jewish holy days is pandering. |

On the Orthodox Jewish holidays, adherents are religiously prohibited from moving their cars. The reasons for this are too lengthy to go into and irrelevant to the issue at hand anyway. No other religion has this restriction. As such, the City does a tremendous service to the Orthodox community by suspending ASP rule. The City is within its rights to keep the rule in effect and collect tons of money from Orthodox owners who don't move their cars. |

I only know it's Orthodox Maundy Thursday because it's on the parking calendar. Similarly, it's the only reason I know about the Solemnity of the Ascension next Thursday. |

If the sanitation workers have off on the Major Legal Holidays, and thus aren't out cleaning the streets, then there's no reason to have ASP in effect. |
