Erm, have you ever actually read them? While the Shabbat rules are long and complicated, they can be fairly succinctly summarised as "no convenience, no fulfillment, and no fun."

Because doing anything fulfilling or fun is "work," you see, and we can't have that on a day of rest. Nope, it's 25 hours of boredom in which you can barely even leave your house!

How does a post about celebrating Passover in my own way have nothing to do with celebrating Passover in my own way?

...it was meant specifically to mock.

Actually, it wasn't. I explained this previously, but you're clearly too selfish to understand it.

The good news is that anyone selfish enough to consider any deviation from his own belief to be a mean-spirited attempt to mock his belief is selfish enough to deserve mocking.

So which is it? Do you concede that my post was not "meant specifically to mock" and your statement was erroneous, or do you concede that you're a self-centered asshole who deserves to be mocked?

Wait, you agree with all the Shabbat rules except the electricity ban, or you agree with me in opposing all Shabbat rules except for the electricity ban?

Until the 19th century, the Sabbath rules were actually good, in that it was a way to protect workers from having to work 7 days a week.

That may be true, but as I've made quite clear on many occasions (including repeatedly in this thread), I oppose the idea of blindly following tradition because it's tradition. It doesn't matter how useful, valuable, or necessary a practice was in the distant past; if it's not useful now, it shouldn't be done.

After all, until the 19th century, horses were indispensable for transportation and labour but you won't hear many people arguing that we absolutely need to keep stables full of them now.

You get a thrill out of bringing pork to a seder.

I said that where? Oh wait, you just made it up.

Then you boast about it so you can show off what an iconoclast you are.

OK, since you're pretty clearly not Jewish, allow me to explain something to you.

Judaism, like every other religion, has numerous different sects and divisions and varieties. Orthodox Jews follow kashrut and thus abstain from pork (and many other delicious foods). Reform Jews consider it more of an individual choice; my synagogue taught that kashrut was basically obsolete, and it's up to you whether to follow it or not.

So telling sarcastically claiming a Jew is "such an iconoclast" for eating pork is like sarcastically claiming that a Christian is "such an iconoclast" for dismissing the sanctity of the Pope.

Last year (or was it the year before?), I posted a thread celebrating Passover the way various Chatters do for most holidays, assuming it was just as innocuous as any other. However, since that post detailed my (literally) unOrthodox festivities, it ignited a massive tantrum on the part of Orthodox Jews screaming that they were the sole arbiters of Judaism and that it's inherently antisemitic to observe Jewish holidays and/or be Jewish in any way that deviates from their narrow-minded dogma.

Given that I finally got another Seder invite this year, I figured it was as good a time as any to make another post celebrating Passover and see if it provokes another tantrum among the crybabies who think they get to tell everyone what to do.

Of course, most of the crybabies are still secluded from the internet in service of one of their asinine rules so thus far we only have the hypocritical ones who are violating Shabbos to complain that I don't obey kashrut.

Well, as noted, I'm opposed to following tradition simply because it's tradition. That's not the same thing as opposing tradition simply because it's tradition.

If you started doing something because it was fun then and you continue to do it because it's fun now, then go ahead. Abstaining from something you enjoy simply because it's a tradition is as absurd as doing something you hate simply because it's a tradition.

As it happens, Seders are fun. I used to attend (at least) one every year and I generally enjoyed it quite a bit. However, while I enjoy many aspects of a Seder, I did not enjoy the dry ritualistic claptrap. Luckily, it turned out that many people shared my opinion. One year, we swapped the Haggaddah for a decidedly irreverent homemade alternative, and that basically just opened the floodgates for various improvements to the tradition.

Doing what works regardless of its status as "tradition" is how things should be.

Conducting a Seder all in English would offend some.

Since Nilet doesn't follow the tenets of Judaism...

OK, let me stop you right there before you make a fool of yourself.

Firstly, Judaism refers to an ethnicity as well as a religion. No matter what I believe, and no matter what I do, I'll always be (ethnically) Jewish because that's determined by my cultural upbringing, which I can't go back and change.

Secondly, the religion of Judaism has multiple sects with different rituals and beliefs. My particular background is an especially liberal variety of Reform Judaism, which places emphasis on reason over dogma. It also carried a fair amount of dogma, but by placing emphasis on reason over dogma I could argue I'm following the spirit of that belief by rejecting its extraneous cruft.

So you're wrong. I am Jewish, and if your argument relies on the assumption that I'm not, you're just making yourself look stupid.

...there's nothing wrong with him having a nice delicious ham dinner tonight.

It's not just me. This is a Seder.

However, it's absurd to refer to his meal this evening as a Seder.

How so?

When a dozen-odd Jews gather at the start of Passover to hold a festive meal for the specific purpose of celebrating Passover, which follows the basic form of a traditional Seder (while tweaking a few details by mutual decision), what do you call it?

In many languages, the holiday celebrating the resurrection of Christ is called "Pascha" or some variation thereon. I consider that more offensive than Nilet calling his meal tonight a Seder.

Seder means order in Hebrew, so if his Seder follows some order of events and includes reading of stories, it's more of a Seder than just having a meal with matzo.
