Turkey shoots down military jet over Syrian border – local media report plane is Russian

Turkey has shot down a Russian military jet which it says violated its airspace near the Syrian border.

The Russian Defence Ministry and Turkish Presidency, quoted in Russian and Turkish media reports, have both described the plane as Russian, and video posted by the Haberturk TV station appeared to show the jet coming down in flames.

A military official, quoted by Turkey's Dogan news agency, said the plane was shot down by Turkish F16s, and that the pilot was given prior warning.

Various reports described the plane as coming down in hostile Syrian territory, and the fate of the two pilots on board was unknown.

CNN Turk published images purporting to show two pilots parachuting safely to the ground, and reported that two helicopters had been sent from Turkey to retrieve them.

While a number of videos were posted to social media appearing to show the plane itself crashing.

Videos and photos in link above.

Since Turkey is a member of NATO, this could get ... interesting.

NATO was warning about the possibility of this exact thing happening, early last month. Erdogan himself was on TV specifically addressing the issue two weeks ago. Why the Russians didn't take him seriously, is another thorny item that will come out in the coming days and weeks.

The Russians are already steadfastly insisting that their plane was over Syrian airspace when it was shot down, but I imagine GPS or radar tracking will settle that bone of contention. Meanwhile, I expect we'll see a considerable increase in airspace monitoring on both sides, and more planes from both sides in the air. Not a good development.

They're testing each other.

What's interesting to me is that Turkey is "fighting ISIS" but would rather hit the Kurds, and Russia is "fighting ISIS" but would rather hit Assad's enemies.

In war you have coalitions but the members have their own agendas.

Everyone currently embroiled in the Syrian mess, is ostensibly "fighting ISIS". But, as you pointed out, everyone also has their own agenda. The trouble is, in "fighting ISIS", some of the belligerents are beginning to fight each other.

I think Russia is fighting ISIS more since their passenger plane came down.

As for Turkey, bring back the Ataturk.

Do not fly. Makes no sense. I have been preaching this for like forever but do you people listen? No. Do you even consider alternate modes of safe and efficient transportation? Nope. Do you even care? Evidently not. I'm wasting my time pissing into the wind spinning my wheels call it what you will. The whole thing is incomprehensible to me. I leave Newark for Dallas, Houston, and Tampa tomorrow by bus and boat.

True. Follow the money/oil. Turkey is ISIL's best customer and major funder. Turkey should be expelled from NATO.

Back when I ran the pirate FM station in New Paltz, the US Air Force purchased a half hour of airtime every Saturday night, sent along a 2 inch vinyl record of big band music to entice the local college students to sign up. Back in the days when Curtis LeMay was still in charge ... and every show ended with this ...

I was quote unquote counting cadence. I welled up with tears watching that clip, tears of pride. Here is the official 2016 list of the Uniformed Services of the United States ranked in order of necessity, firepower, and prestige.

1. United States Air Force
2. United States Marine Corps
3. United States Navy
4. United States Coast Guard
5. United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps
6. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps
7. United States Army

And now, in an age of Amazon drones and ICBM's, it's good that you hit the silk when you did whilst the Chair Force still had some prestige. The Air Force has gotten with the times and about the best you can expect after your DD 214 is to place the official insignia in the lavatory.

Semper foo, fly high.

Wow...so many cool vintage planes...I wonder if the people that sequence ever imagined that their (then) brand-new B-52 bomber would still be in service well into the 21st century. The original pilots of that aircraft have long since gone on to the hereafter, and now their grandchildren and great-grandchildren are flying their planes. Incredible!
