NATO was warning about the possibility of this exact thing happening, early last month. Erdogan himself was on TV specifically addressing the issue two weeks ago. Why the Russians didn't take him seriously, is another thorny item that will come out in the coming days and weeks.The Russians are already steadfastly insisting that their plane was over Syrian airspace when it was shot down, but I imagine GPS or radar tracking will settle that bone of contention. Meanwhile, I expect we'll see a considerable increase in airspace monitoring on both sides, and more planes from both sides in the air. Not a good development. |
