Oh? So now it's OK to consort with the enemy if it's Obama doing it?Remember THIS? http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/03/31/sprj.irq.geraldo/ Or is it only an issue when FOX News blows the secrets? Sorry, but I was a reporter back in Vietnam. If the military told you NOT to print it, by God you didn't. There's no rules of journalism anymore. I applaud them for doing this. "Loose lips sink ships" and all that Curtis LeMay horseshit that you ascribe to. It was for reals. |

In 1944, the Chicago Tribune managed to discover that the Allies had broken the German Enigma codes, and actually published a story about this. President Roosevelt chose to ignore this, and let the story die a natural death, rather than prosecuting it in the public spotlight, which would certainly have tipped our hand to the Axis. That said, I am always very leery of military curbs on journalists, and I hope DoD recognizes the delicate balance between freedom of the press, and operational security. |

You are correct about a reporter can be an unprivileged combatant, and you are right that Geraldo deserved to be kicked out, but the basis was careless stupidity; he wasn't an unprivileged combatant. But I'm glad to see someone on the left finally admitting that there are some people ineligible for Geneva/Hague Convention protections. |

Hate to break it, but OpSec always came first. When I went out for WBAI, I was the only one in the news department that wasn't scared shitless of uniforms so I was assigned to the Pentagon for major stories. The rules were pretty simple, "stick to what's on the sheet" and NEVER reveal troop movements or locations. Pretty simple actually.Anything that was on the sheets was fair game for questioning. Playing by the rules got me that blue card for the White House, and I still managed to piss them off on a regular basis by pointing out when the tallies didn't add up. :) Geraldo was stupid. (and still is, knew him from channel 7) |

Exactly. What I was trying to point out is that even Geraldo's stupid there wouldn't qualify, but over in Eye-Rack and other locations, many of the local reporters moonlight as spies for the bad guys. I'm pretty sure that's what they're after given that "PRESS" has always been given leeway and that's why press credentials are often used to cover for spies. |

Geraldo was stupid. (and still is, knew him from channel 7)But at least he still has a high opinion of his physical appearance. :-) |

Considering we have the most hostile WH to the press in history, I'm not sure how this can be new news. |
