I think this only gives clues as to what ultimately happened to the plane (which wasn't really in doubt by most). Not what caused the crash or where the rest of the plane might be.This piece of the wing may have been floating for over a year. Given the effectiveness of their modeling thus far (the "drift" models they constructed said that the likely point where things would wash ashore was the southern coast of Indonesia -- only missed it by 5000 miles), I'd say it is a pretty long shot that this will lead to any useful information about the location of the fuselage. |

But it may put pressure on Australia, Malaysia, and China to continue to fund the search. It's hard to tell from news reports, but they seem to not be pursuing one obvious search area. Assume for the sake of argument that the captain did all of this deliberately and tried to do a soft landing to minimize debris. OK, so then maybe he would have flown southward as indicated by the satellite signals, then when he ran out of fuel would have glided into the wind in order to hit water at the lowest possible speed. I've never seen the slightest hint that they are using even part of their resources to cover the search area that hypothesis would imply. |

Depending upon the type of barnacles, etc. attached to the flaperon, oceanographers my be able to pinpoint where the plane went down. I'm assuming these are a type of barnacle unique to one particular area of the Pacific. |

Anyway Cap'n, they're hauling up the Jolly Roger on me old barnacle bucket across the bay so I've just got time to give Daisy the Dockside Doxy a damn good swaggling too and I'll be off with the next tide. My bumboat awaits. |
