I'd say it is a pretty long shot that this will lead to any useful information about the location of the fuselage.

I agree. But it may put pressure on Australia, Malaysia, and China to continue to fund the search.

It's hard to tell from news reports, but they seem to not be pursuing one obvious search area. Assume for the sake of argument that the captain did all of this deliberately and tried to do a soft landing to minimize debris. OK, so then maybe he would have flown southward as indicated by the satellite signals, then when he ran out of fuel would have glided into the wind in order to hit water at the lowest possible speed. I've never seen the slightest hint that they are using even part of their resources to cover the search area that hypothesis would imply.
