Ottawa Whole Foods charged for being open on Good Friday

By Tony Spears
Monday, April 20, 2015 12:43:21 MDT PM
Whole Foods may be in a heap of trouble after police laid charges Monday alleging an location was open on Good Friday.

Ottawa police spokesman Const. Chuck Benoit said Whole Foods management will appear in court next month to answer to four charges under the Retail Business Holidays Act.

The charges are for carrying on business during a holiday.

The manager of the location was served the paperwork Monday.

"It's an order to attend court," Benoit said.

By law, most stores must remain closed on statutory holidays such as Good Friday and Christmas, though there are exceptions for small businesses and businesses operating in designated tourism zones, the act says.

Fines upon conviction range as high as $50,000 or the gross holiday sales, whichever is greater, the act says.

Whole Foods told Postmedia Network earlier this month the store believed Lansdowne Park, which is off the Rideau Canal in central Ottawa, was a designated tourist area.

The company will appear in court May 21.

Whole Foods reduces outlook following lower 3Q sales

Whole Foods cuts outlook after 3Q sales, profit miss

Whole Foods cut its sales forecast for the year after its quarterly profit and sales fell short of expectations amid intensifying competition.

The retailer noted that sales growth slowed in the last two weeks of the period, when New York City officials said the chain's stores were overcharging customers by overstating the weight of pre-packed goods.

Whole Foods noted the audit "garnered national media attention."

The company said sales in existing stores edged up 1.3 percent for the three-month period ended July 5. That's down from the 3.9 percent increase in the year-ago period.

In the current quarter so far, the company said sales were up just 0.6 percent.

For the full fiscal year, Whole Foods now expects sales at established locations to rise in the low single digit percentages, down from the previous forecast of growth in the low- to mid-single digits.

Whole Foods Market Inc., based in Austin, Texas, is trying to find new ways to drive up sales as organic foods become more widely available. At the same time, it's also trying to appeal to a broader audience by shaking its "Whole Paycheck" image and offering more affordable prices.

"In this rapidly changing marketplace, we believe we are taking the necessary steps to positions ourselves for the longer term," co-CEO Walter Robb said in a statement.

In May, the company said it would open a new chain of smaller stores with lower prices starting next year. To emphasize the affordability, the chain will be named after the company's 365 house brands.

For the third quarter ended July 5, the company earned $154 million, or 43˘ per share. That included an expense of a penny per share in relation to California's new paid sick leave law.

Analysts expected 45˘ per share, according to Zacks Investment Research.

Total revenue was $3.63 billion, also short of the $3.7 billion analysts expected.

A year ago the company earned $151 million, or 41˘ per share, on revenue of $3.38 billion.

Shares of Whole Foods dropped 10 percent to $36.90 in after-hours trading.

I would debate just how available organic food really is.

Try getting quality fresh produce at Walmart or Publix.

Even Trader Joe's is a joke. They don't have organic blueberries or grass-fed beef. Their produce, organic or not, is pathetic. Heck, they don't even sell frozen peaches!!! The fuck?

Whole Foods is a gynocentric experience. And for every kale-sipping yogi, there are 20 fat feminazis loading up on sugary energy drinks.

The main benefit to going to Whole Foods is avoiding the 300 pound T2D with several out of control kids.

I think fat feminism is going to overtake attractiveness. This will hurt Whole Foods.

Most "organic food" these days comes from the very same supermarket cartels that always sold crap. They can AFFORD the certifications and after all, who's going to bust them for faking it? And it ain't even organic usually.

Like guacamole? Montezuma's revenge comes at no extra charge with each sprig of cilantro. Regulating food for safety is COMMUNISM and the conservative cause has won. :(

There's even a serious right wing rebellion against the FDA over even trying.

I try to eat kale and green beans because they are usually US grown, while I find almost all broccoli is from Mexico or Ecuador.

Most foodies don't want food that travels so far to get to your shelf.

Cilantro is an ingredient I use for guacamole. Honestly I did not look at country of origin like I do on fruits and veggies.

I don't buy it often because supermarkets sell it as a bunch, and it's more than I need.

So yeah, I was aware of the conditions in Mexico and other countries. If you treat workers like shit, they work like shit, and will lash out on the products they're producing.

But I'm sure my kale and green beans and peaches are organic. I can tell by the look and taste at this point.

That situation isn't even lashing out, looks to me as though they didn't have a single other option but to shit on what YOU eat. :(

Yeah, it may piss off folks here when I talk about real food, but out here where the farmers are, we may not opt for much in the way of exotic, but we know where every veggie, ounce of meat and bread comes from, they feed it to their own kids. And if you know how to preserve it, you can eat it all year. I'd rather that myself.

But hey ... there's always SlopSite and Food Lion for those who don't care. :)

So I did get stuck eating broccoli today because I was too lazy to go to Whole Foods.

Yes, the farmers have no choice but to shit in the fields. They get dropped off far from camp site and work all day. I always look at my food and wonder who worked on it.

Whole Foods recalling specialty cheese; may have listeria contamination (sold in NY and FL)

Whole Foods recalling specialty cheese sold in NY, Florida

Whole Foods is recalling a cheese sold in one store in Florida and another in New York City because it may cause potentially fatal food poisoning.

Spokeswoman Liz Burkhart said in a news release Tuesday that the upscale Texas-based chain is recalling "Pecorino Aged Cheese in Walnut Leaves" sold in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the Bowery section of New York City.

The cheese may be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that can be fatal to young, old or frail people and cause stillbirths.

The Bowery cheese has labels beginning with the code 294239 and sell-by dates from March 3 to 8. The Florida cheese has the code 290107 and sell-by dates from Feb. 29 to March 8.

Burkhart says customers should throw out the cheese and bring in their receipt for a refund.

That might be true if the increase was only in the U.S. but it's not; the number of reported cases has been rising for years all over the EU and the UK. I think improvements in diagnosing have something to do with this.

Funny thing about living in a socialist state, and having a great socialist state next door in Vermont. We don't run into any of that if we buy local or from across the border. Know why? We have agriculture departments with strict rules, AND INSPECTORS. EU and UK are also on that "small government" kick too.

Can't do much about imports from the red states other than to not buy any, and thus we don't have those issues. Hmmm.

MMMMmmmmmmm. :)

What about imports from blue states like MA? There have been listeria outbreaks from producers there. Or local cheese producers in NY? Listeria has been found in their products. Or Wisconsin? There's a blue state for ya...and they've had listeria issues there with local cheeses.

Funny things, facts.

"Facts" can be readily twisted. Something to keep in mind when you hit the blogs and the talking lamp. I was talking about the budget cuts which have cut FDA inspections (federal) and how blue states at least largely kept their own inspections intact. Especially New York and Vermont.

But leave it to Dave to bring up Massachussetts which was not mentioned.
