Perhaps in NY fast-food jobs are for young people. In vast parts of Middle America, fast=food jobs are held by older people, as their primary employment. |

There will be elimination of food perks: A perk working in the fast food industry (as I once started there, working at three different McDonalds in the early 1990s) is free or reduced meals. These meals usually add, on average, an $1 an hour to the salary, and they are often tax free. The wage increase will drive labor costs, forcing companies to look by other means to cut labor expenses, such as eliminating free or discounted food. This is the cost of doing business, you get a bigger salary but you would have to give up the food perk.Loss of a $1/hr benefit in exchange for a pay $6.25/hr raise. Has this Gerber guy ever tried arithmetic? |

This is likely to drive automation in the business. I would expect that first to go would be order takers, which can be pretty easily replaced by self-ordering and payment systems. Such systems are already in frequent use in parts of Europe where wages are high.Next to go is probably "out-sourcing" of the clean-up functions to a third party vendor -- making these jobs (sweeping up, taking out the trash) outside the "fast food" industry and lowering the required wage. |

What I don't understand is why the legislators showed such an incredible lack of wisdom and common sense by singling out the fast food industry for this unwarranted increase. Most home health care aides or those who work in assisted living earn $10 per hour or less. Why not them? After all, they care for our loved ones. |

Emergency medical services are something the public never thinks about until they are suffering crushing substernal chest pains, find themselves under a bus, or are exsanguinating. Then the ambulance can't get there fast enough, and the crew is worth its weight in gold.But when it's time to discuss how much that back-breaking (literally--EMTs spend their whole day carrying people down [and up] flights of stairs, over all kinds of terrain, and under the most severe weather and social conditions), dangerous, and absolutely vital labor is worth, well, suddenly, those dedicated professionals aren't worth jack bone anymore... This is also true for firefighters working for "career" departments, in most parts of the country. SMH! |

The only time the fast food workers get paid by the corporation is where the corporation directly owns the restaurant. The majority of McD, BKs, Wendy's etc are franchised. That means the franchisee pays the workers from his profits. The franchisee has more than likely already taken a 2nd or 3rd mortgage on his home to pay the franchise fee (usually $200,000 to $300,000 or more) to the corporation. Then he has to pay rent on the location, electricity, gas, possibly real estate taxes (depends on the lease), buy supplies/raw food as well as underpay his workers. Any change in the restaurant (new signs etc) comes out of the franchisees pocket not the corporations (ever wonder why some McDs look newer on the outside/inside than others?). [Alright - in Manhattan you have Reise Restaurants who have the franchise on most of the chain eating places in mid-town Manhattan. They underpay, overcharge and don't participate in rewards programs offered by some of the chains. But they are more of an exception in NYC]. |

With fast food workers having a minimum baseline of $15/hr, the market itself will raise the wages of more skilled workers or they'll leave to go work at Wendy's.The more skilled people should have organized like the burger flippers did. Anyway, I think $15 is excessive. A minimum wage of $12/hr for everyone would have been better. |

Anyway, I think $15 is excessive.$15 is effective 1/1/2019 in NYC and 7/1/2021 in the rest of the state. At least as far as NYC is concerned, this is not particularly radical. I agree it should be for everyone though. For upstate, $15 in 2021 might have an impact on jobs. |
