Emergency medical services are something the public never thinks about until they are suffering crushing substernal chest pains, find themselves under a bus, or are exsanguinating. Then the ambulance can't get there fast enough, and the crew is worth its weight in gold.

But when it's time to discuss how much that back-breaking (literally--EMTs spend their whole day carrying people down [and up] flights of stairs, over all kinds of terrain, and under the most severe weather and social conditions), dangerous, and absolutely vital labor is worth, well, suddenly, those dedicated professionals aren't worth jack bone anymore...

This is also true for firefighters working for "career" departments, in most parts of the country. SMH!
