See, that's why we're not interested in soccer. We're usually not interested in things we're not good at. Which would make you think that we'd stop invading and occupying other countries... |

However, the US was ranked #5 overall of all the teams entering the FIFA World Cup. Getting placed in the Group of Death though has not helped soccer's cause in the USA. |

We'll need at least a win and a tie against Ghana and Italy to have any shot at advancing. IIRC margin of victory/defeat matters, so we may need 2 victories given the horrendous performance today. |

I think that we're in the 2nd toughest group. Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia, and Holland are considered a tougher group by most. |

Italy and even Ghana looked superior to us. I can't even describe how disappointed I am.I knew we weren't 5th, but we looked like we didn't even belong on the same field as the Czech's. And they barely even qualified for the world cup! |

American sports have been completely compromised by television.Baseball is the only one of the three major sports that's been able to maintain its integrity when it comes to television. There are natural breaks in play which allow for commercials to be aired without disruption of the game schedule. Contrast it with football and basketball, in which the entire pace of the game is built around commercials (e.g. football's 2-minute warning and basketball's incessant timeouts near the end of the game.) Tell that to Pedro Martinez, who was fuming at FOX for making him wait every inning so that they could get all their commercials in a few weeks ago. Advertising has disrupted baseball. If I wanted to know that David Wright was the 15th batter of the game, I'd be told without also noting that Geico wants me to know that I could save 15% on my car insurance. |

Now it's double that, mostly because of the advertising holdup. In addition to its relative cost, it was like going to a movie, something you did in addition to your afternoon/evening activities, not an event that you centered the whole day around. That Met game I attended a couple of weeks ago took 4 hours for 9 innings, and another hour and a half for the extra innings. There's 5 and a half hours, so now it's a major daily event, and the tailgate party has been borrowed from football, so it's more like an 8 hour day at the ballpark. Nothing against tailgating, mind you; it's ok to get your beer drinking prepwork done at $1 a bottle rather than at $6.75. That's another gripe for a future rant...your pal, Fred |

Advertising has disrupted baseball. But not yet as badly as some other sports. Exactly. Pre-existing breaks between innings might be lengthened to accommodate more TV commercials. While hardly ideal, that's much better than what happens in football and basketball, in which breaks in the action are created merely for TV purposes (e.g. the loathesome "two minute warning"). Those can change the entire flow of a game and possibly affect its outcome. My LIRR/NYCT blog |
