Same women who think they're victims, have no problem holding men to a higher standard. |

Because diet and exercise can lead one to lose weight, unless one has some illness that would contraindicate doing that.First, that's not actually true. Diet and exercise can lead to a temporary weight loss, but this provokes the body to react as if it were starving— metabolism slows to compensate for exercise, and hunger increases dramatically causing diets to end. "Willpower" is not a solution; very few people have the willpower to override basic survival instinct. (If you think otherwise, I'll pay you $1,000 to hold your hand in a candle flame for an hour; pain and the instinctive drive to end it is just a survival reaction, so surely you can muster the willpower to put it on hold for a mere hour to earn such a considerable payout.) Significant permanent weight loss is biologically impossible for most people. However, more importantly, you have not explained why being fat is a personal failing. Even if something could be changed by a simple act does not make the refusal to do so a "personal failing." After all, you could easily learn how to become a plumber; does that make your lack of plumbing skills a "personal failing?" |

Posted by Nilet on Sun Jul 5 23:57:39 2015, in response to Re: #fatfeminism Check out this bod, posted by Spider-Pig on Sun Jul 5 23:43:34 2015. There's nothing "magical" about it. When you're running, you burn more energy than when you're walking; when you're awake, you burn more energy than when you're asleep. When you see a threat, your metabolism speeds up preemptively to prepare you to run away, and when you prepare for bed, your metabolism slows down preemptively in anticipation of sleep. In fact, your metabolism changes many times throughout the day, often in anticipation of future needs. Starvation is just one of the many triggers of metabolic changes. Meanwhile, the sensation of hunger and the drive to eat is also regulated up and down throughout the day— and starvation cranks it into overdrive. Trying to resist that basic survival instinct is all but impossible, as my example with the candle should demonstrate. |

I'd ask you on what basis you think I'm an asshole but we both know you can't answer that.So instead, I'll point out that being an asshole has basically no relationship to being wrong, so even if your claim was entirely true, you're basically declaring that you've chosen to deny simple facts because I was too rude in pointing them out. Which is not exactly a very mature thing to do. |

The candle would actually be destroying my hand. Eating less is not destructive, until you are actually starving. And exercise and weight loss can change metabolism, but not just eating more or less. |

The candle would actually be destroying my hand. Eating less is not destructive, until you are actually starving.I'm sure I could devise a method for inflicting pain without causing physical destruction. The point remains— very few people have the "willpower" to override basic survival instinct for any length of time, yet you think any fat person should easily have enough willpower to do it for every waking hour of their life. And exercise and weight loss can change metabolism, but not just eating more or less. Many things can change metabolism. Starvation is one of them. When you are starving, your body will automatically slow your metabolism to conserve energy. And when you lose any significant amount of weight, your body assumes that you are starving. |

Your body will still require the same amount of energy to operate. Just like you can't make your car more fuel efficient just because you're running out of gas. |

Posted by Nilet on Mon Jul 6 00:36:41 2015, in response to Re: #fatfeminism Check out this bod, posted by Spider-Pig on Mon Jul 6 00:21:41 2015. No, it won't. Your body will still require the same amount of energy to operate. That's not correct. Metabolism varies from one person to the next, and from one activity to the next— if it were not possible to increase your metabolism, then exercise wouldn't burn additional calories. Your body naturally regulates your metabolism in response to many factors; starvation (or the appearance thereof) is one of them. Just like you can't make your car more fuel efficient just because you're running out of gas. Your car is a decidedly simpler machine than your body— since it does not naturally regulate its energy usage, your analogy is not apt. Although if you consider the driver as "part" of the car, then your analogy actually backfires— if you're running out of gas, you may choose to take the direct route home rather than a circuitous scenic route, thus making the driver-car system more energy efficient at the task of getting home. Of course, the more likely scenario is that if you're running out of gas, you'll buy more gas. Similarly, when your body thinks it's running out of fuel, it will activate your survival instincts to compel you to add more fuel. |
