The Hill George Takei: Justice Thomas 'a clown in blackface' By Jesse Byrnes July 02, 2015, 11:27 am Actor and gay rights advocate George Takei is slamming Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas after his dissent to last week's decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide claimed that the government can neither give nor take away human dignity. "He is a clown in blackface sitting on the Supreme Court. He gets me that angry," the former "Star Trek" star said in an interview with Fox 10 this week in Phoenix, standing alongside his longtime partner and husband. "For him to say slaves had dignity ... I mean, doesn't he know slaves were chained? That they were whipped on the back?" Takei asked. Dissenting in the 5-4 Supreme Court same-sex marriage case, Thomas, an African-American, reflected on the origins of human dignity within society, invoking the belief that humans have God-given "inherent worth." "That vision is the foundation upon which this Nation was built. The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved," Thomas wrote. "Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them," Thomas wrote. "And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away." Takei responded to Thomas' remarks in the case, Obergefell v. Hodges, reflecting in an MSNBC op-ed on his time in a Japanese-American internment camp as a young boy. "I was only a child when soldiers with bayonetted rifles marched up our driveway in Los Angeles, banged on our door, and ordered us out," Takei wrote. "I remember my mothers’ tears as we gathered what little we could carry, and then were sent to live for many weeks in a single cramped horse stall at the Santa Anita racetracks." Takei reflected on his family's assets being frozen and their family being shipped by railcar a few months later to Arkansas where they "slept inside bug-infested barracks, ate in a noisy mess hall, and relieved ourselves in common latrines that had no walls between the stalls." "To say that the government does not bestow or grant dignity does not mean it cannot succeed in stripping it away through the imposition of unequal laws and deprivation of due process. At the very least, the government must treat all its subjects with equal human dignity," he wrote. In the Fox 10 interview, Takei also mentioned rape scenes from the movie "12 Years a Slave." "And he says they had dignity as slaves?" Takei asked. "My parents lost everything that they worked for in the middle of their lives in their thirties. My father's business, our home, our freedom. And we're supposed to call that dignified?" Takei continued. "This man does not belong on the Supreme Court. He is an embarrassment. He is a disgrace to America."

But can't he criticize Thomas without using the racist "Clown in Blackface" slur? He also epitomizes the popular Liberal and racist conceit that certain members of ethnic groups have to support everything that comes down the Progressive Pike or they are phony members of that group. The latest is the Washington Post assessing all the ways that Bobby Jindal is not Indian enough in From Piyush to Bobby: How does Jindal feel about his family’s past? Better watch out, ethnics. Ted Cruz is being grilled even as we speak on his "favorite Cuban foods." Personally, I could never make it as a Jewish candidate. I could praise my grandmother's Romanian gefilte fish and eggplant cavier, but wait until they found out my mother used to prepare bacon and eggs for breakfast. As everyone knows, real Jews don't eat eggs.

Second, Takei doesn't seem to understand the meaning of Human Dignity that Thomas obviously does. Human Dignity is inherent in a person's soul. When the oppressed maintain their inner worth in oppression they are showing their strength. I personally knew two Holocaust survivors who were able to keep their human indignity in an unimaginable situation. So from what sense of Inner Dignity in Takei does he feel empowered to use such a vile racial slur? Sometime I think some Liberals harbor deep-seated prejudices against groups they pretend to bleed for and enjoy some kind of release when they find members of those groups on whom they can unload their hidden hatreds.

But even taking your "eye of the beholder" POV, suppose it could be taken as an insult, interesting how Takei went to a frankly racist slur. I'm actually disappointed in him.

On the crappy old TV's of the day, viewers couldn't really see JUST how cheap the sets and everything else about the original Star Trek were. Now that Star Trek has been remastered from the original 35MM film in HD and available on Hulu (season 1 is free) you can actually see how not a nickel was spared on cheapness and really really crappy visuals. NBC sure got their money's worth. :)

On the eve of this Independence Day, I have a renewed sense of what this country stands for, and how I personally could help achieve it. The promise of equality and freedom is one that all of us have to work for, at all times. I know this as a survivor of the Japanese American internment, which each day drives me only to strive harder to help fulfill that promise for future generations. I recently was asked by a reporter about Justice Clarence Thomas’s dissent in the marriage equality cases, in which he wrote words that really got under my skin, by suggesting that the government cannot take away human dignity through slavery, or though internment. In my mind that suggested that this meant he felt the government therefore shouldn’t be held accountable, or should do nothing in the face of gross violations of dignity. When asked by a reporter about the opinion, I was still seething, and I referred to him as a “clown in blackface” to suggest that he had abdicated and abandoned his heritage. This was not intended to be racist, but rather to evoke a history of racism in the theatrical arts. While I continue to vehemently disagree with Justice Thomas, the words I chose, said in the heat of anger, were not carefully considered. I am reminded, especially on this July 4^th holiday, that though we have the freedom to speak our minds, we must use that freedom judiciously. Each of us, as humans, have hot-button topics that can set-us off, and Justice Thomas had hit mine, that is clear. But my choice of words was regrettable, not because I do not believe Justice Thomas is deeply wrong, but because they were ad hominem and uncivil, and for that I am sorry. I often ask fans to keep the level of discourse on this page and in comments high, and to remember that we all love this country and for what it stands for, even if we often disagree passionately about how to achieve those goals. I did not live up to my own high standards in this instance. I hope all of you have a wonderful, safe and joyously free July 4^th, the first where all married couples in the U.S. can enjoy the full liberties of matrimony equally. It is truly a blessing to be an American today.
