I agree that they should learn some English. But, where would they learn it? All of them are poor, so they never took a foreign language in their schools. The fact is, like it or not, they are here. I don't want them here either, but police in some communities have to speak some Spanish.Sometimes, reality sucks, so wishing them to disappear just won't happen. |

I had a friend, many years ago, who spoke several dialects of his native Russian. When he grew up, he joined the NYPD. It wasn't long before the department discovered his facility with these language, and he was taken out of his Academy class, set up in a surveillance van with headphones glued to his ears, translating the evil plans of no-goodniks in Little Odessa. This he did for five years, and then, in return for his services, he was awarded with a detective's gold shield. He stayed, AFAIK, in OCCB for the remainder of his career. |

Knowing some Russian has been a great benefit for me as well in computer security research in tracking down the sources of so many interesting little bits of malware, getting to know who wrote what and then finding them. Here are the most common languages spoken by Black people living in the US (in no particular order after English):English French Creole Spanish Portuguese Arabic Swahili Amharic Millions of Black people in America are bilingual, as well. I rode in EMS with a Lieutenant who spoke five languages, all with a perfect Brooklyn accent, and he was one of the darkest-hued people of color I've ever known. Where you get your assumptions and generalizations from is still a mystery to me. |
