I think JayZeeBMT needs to read your post and respond to it.On my end, I am fascinated with mafia stories and NYPD corruption. NYPD has a long history of corruption. |

In the 1970s a gay bar opened up in ultra-Italian Bensonhurst. It was called 'Broad-Way' or something like that. Last place you'd expect a gay bar in a conservative catholic neighborhood with a heavy mob presence, right? Gays were not tolerated too well in southwest Brooklyn in those days. Except that this place was allegedly owned by the gay son of a local mobster. |

In the 1960s and 70s, gays and gay bars were illegal, and almost all of them were owned or controlled by the mob, which also collected all the money from cigarette machines they installed in them. At the time of the Stonewall rebellion, these bars were on the "pads" of whatever NYPD precinct they were located in. It was also illegal to serve alcohol to "known homosexuals", so the State Liquor Authority inspectors had to be paid off, too. On the night of the Stonewall rebellion, cops from the Vice Squad raided the bar (who weren't getting paid off), and the fed-up patrons finally fought back, after years of harassment by the NYPD.Interestingly, the mob, which absolutely forbade homosexuality in its ranks, stayed involved with the gay bars in NYC long after they were legalized in the early 1990s...SMH! |

They were an excellent source of revenue. They could charge outrageous prices for shitty alcohol, as their customer base basically had no other alternatives for socializing. The mafia was all about money. Any attempt to define a mafia "morality" is absurd. They sold heroin to kids, for Christ's sake. |
