Or if you prefer, about 54% of a NYC public school system. (Yes, we have about twice as many kids in public school as you have people PERIOD.) Ok the 24 hour city edges out the other cities which are 18-20 hour cities. That which makes NY unique is disappearing and other cities are catching up to the amenities. They are building a condo skyscraper somewhere on midtown east. Some condos going for $100 million. Mostly Chinese buyers. NYC is still the place to be for some reason. If I was in charge that condo would be forced to provide low-income units within the building, to promote diversity. I'm serious. |

The kind of "mojo" that was here when Beame, Koch & Dinkins were the landlords? If thats the kind of mojo you speak of, than good riddance to that. The kind of "mojo" when there were hookers workin Lex Ave. outside of GCT in broad daylight? Not to mention brothels masquerading as massage parlors. The kind of "mojo' when there were 3 card monte setups all over town? The kind of "mojo" when graffiti was considered art? This town cleaned up its act. Back then in the "mojo" years it was dying a slow death. Still a tourist magnet, knocked down but got back up. No one with at least a minimal grip on sanity would want to go back to that. |

Actually graffiti didn't become "art" until it was gone from the subways. Some people miss how inviting NYC was to middle-class. Nedick's. Tad's Steak. Automat. Now it's Pret-A-Manger and coffee where Manhattan types loiter for hours on their laptops. |

Oh please, just because one points to NYC as a banal soon to be generic place doesn't mean one wants to return to the "Taxi Driver" era.The point is, the day of NYC as a city above all cities has gone, with NY becoming more generic and other cities catching up on amenities, and being more affordable to boot. your pal, Fred |

There is still one left near Times Sq.And as of a few years ago just as shitty as it's always been. My dad liked that place. My earliest memories of Times Square (the "Taxi Driver" era) is of Tad's when it was in its former (70's) location.
