I-278 becomes I-395, as it is a spur of I-95. (I-195 is already taken in New Jersey.) 2. The Hugh Carey Tunnel gets the hidden designation of I-595. 3. The Sheridan Expressway gets the hidden designation of I-795. 4. The Throgs Neck Expressway becomes I-995. 5. I-80 would be extended all the way to Riverhead with a new terminus at CR-58, taking the place of I-295 to the LIE, and then I-495 east of the Clearview. 6. I-678 becomes I-180. 7. I-495 west of the Clearview becomes I-380. 8. I-295 remains as it is, co-signed with I-80. |

Have any Interstate Highways anywhere in the US ever been logically renumbered? While were at it bring back the old NYS highway route numbers. Forest Ave (SI) NY439, Park Avenue (Manhattan) NY22, Lower Manhattan NY1A, etc. |

I would like a system where all roads in NYC boundaries had their own numbering based on a NYC number system.NYC 1 could be the Henry Hudson down to the West Side Hwy to the Battery Tunnel to the Prospect Expy to Ocean Pkwy into Surf Ave. NYC 2 could be the FDR from the Battery Tunnel around and up to the Harlem River Dr to Dyckman and onto wherever. NYC 3 could be the SIE to the Verrazano to the BQE. NYC 4 could be the whole Belt / Cross Island system from Bay Ridge to Whitestone. And so on. The numbers could be sequenced to make more sense of course, especially for where two roads meet (e.g. it would be good for the NYC 1 and NYC 3 examples I give above to have sequential numbers instead since they run together for a while above Hamilton Ave; and for the LIE and GCP to have sequential numbers too). Of course I know there are legal issues; just fantasizing. |

Its just keeping the "rules" for numbering, it's like when you're in a building you want the numbers to sequentially increase not jump all over the place. |

I was just wondering because the city is made up of multiple counties. I'm not sure how designations would work. Also, I wasn't sure what the policy would be with numbering non-truck routes such as the parkways. |

FWIW, all the major trunk routes (parkways and expressways) within NYC are assigned an internal "secret" NY State DOT route number. While these do not appear on trailblazer signposts with the highway names, they do appear on the little green signs that are posted every 10th of a mile along those routes. |

"Forest Ave (SI) NY439, Park Avenue (Manhattan) NY22, Lower Manhattan NY1A, etc. "Who needs 'em, really? Of all places, most dense urban areas don't need route numbers, except when major numbered routes enter one side and go out the other. What possable purpose or utility would result from re-numbering Park Ave. as Route 22? How would that help anyone getting directions? Would anyone seeking to reach Route 22 in Westchester drive up Park Ave., Jerome Ave. and East 233rd St. to get there? Of course not. |

True, but the system is helpful. Especially for the routes that run 1000 miles or more. It's helpful to know that I-25 is west of I-35. |

It's helpful to know that I-25 is west of I-35.Maybe as a point of trivia, but I can't think of any real world use for that. I just don't get how being able to second guess the road number from Denver to some farm in Wyoming helps one get from Kansas City to Omaha. |

If you are going to number a series of national routes, why not number them in order from east to west or north to south? Why would random numbering be better? |
