Remember, in the 1950s, the top tax rate was over 90% and no one would even think of proposing deregulation. Plus, I'm sure Olog has called Eisenhower a communist at some point, and he definitely declared policies Eisenhower supported as being "communist." |

But how does that translate into measureable lost economic output?Consider a national company in the US with 4 time zones and only 1 office. It's desired to have telephone access from 9-5 for all zones. That means paying somebody from 9-8. With overtime that's 12 1/2 hours pay instead of 8 hours. |

Posted by WMATAGMOAGH on Thu Oct 30 20:02:19 2014, in response to Re: Important Reminders!, posted by Stephen Bauman on Thu Oct 30 19:50:58 2014. Actually, imagine a setup where a firm has offices in Frankfurt, London, New York, and San Francisco. They have a weekly conference call involving staff at all four offices on Mondays at 5 PM Frankfurt time, 4 PM London time, 11 AM New York time, and 8 AM San Francisco time and otherwise have regular meetings or other work to do with coworkers and/or clients in their own offices.. Now imagine what happens when the time differences are "out of sync." In the week when Europe falls back but the US has yet to do so in October, it isn't so bad though perhaps inconvenient for a week. But in the spring, when the US springs forward nearly a full month ahead of Europe, it is quite inconvenient and unproductive. |

Posted by Nilet on Thu Oct 30 20:23:26 2014, in response to Re: Important Reminders!, posted by FtGreeneG on Thu Oct 30 18:53:34 2014. The problem with that is that 14 years ago, all of the factors that led to our current fuckup were already in motion— we'd already armed and trained Al Qaeda, we'd already appointed the judges that handed Bush the White House, we'd already passed most the deregulation that caused the economic collapse and created the environment to finish it off, and the Republican slide into lunacy was already well underway and difficult to stop. After all, they impeached Clinton over an affair— obviously, the Republican Party was already crazy enough to believe they had an absolute right to rule and a Democratic president is inherently illegitimate, justifying anything necessary to get rid of him. The 9/11 attacks just gave them the popular panic and political cover to be able to do what they were going to do in the first place. Without 9/11, the country would have arrived at its current state of fuckup, just for different reasons. |

I think the situation with 9/11 (terrorist activity on US soil) was bound to happen no matter who was pres due to our involvement in other countries affairs. I will say thus about Clinton his economic globalization policies certainly started our middle class death spiral... |

And he actually did try to track down Al Qaeda, but the Republicans blocked his efforts, accusing him of trying to "distract" people from their imaginary scandal over his sex life.Clinton's primary role in our descent into madness was simply being a Democrat while endorsing Republican madness— the Republican Party's sprint to the extreme right would have been political suicide if the Democrats hadn't been willing to follow them, and Clinton proved that the Democratic Party was willing to abandon the center as well. |
