You might want to see if you can find the collected essays of George Orwell - 4 volumes. If not buying, then at the local library.They span from the early 30s to he late 40s. I mentioned these in an earlier post. They're quite good. I've only read the first volume cover to cover, and poked around in the others. Have them in paperback. These essays are really where he made his mark. What I found is that many of the themes that turned up in 1984, he wrote about and worked out in these essays. His ideas about propaganda, political movements, the masses, upper class leftism in England, are almost contemporary the way he dissects and analyzes them. He saw through everything and called a spade a spade. It's beem my refrain these days, "Where is Orwell when we need him?" Oh yeah, and he really dug Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer - devoted a whole essay to it. |
