Thought people might be interested in this. Yahoo article with links, scientist has discovered a giant (puppy-sized) spider in the rrainforest in Guyana. If it's slow loading, it can be googled.

giant spiders in the tropics, palmetto bugs, and other big flying things in Florida, water moccasins in the Carolinas? Several more reasons not to venture south of Tottenville.

I hate to break this to you, but palmetto bugs, otherwise known as the American cockroach, it very common in NYC. Strangely, it's apparently not native to North America.

Although they ARE related, the Palmetto bug is, like most red state insects, much larger than what crawls around the city.

The guys down in Florida have wings and can fly... something the
cucarachas can't do here.

American cockroaches, a.k.a. waterbugs? Dunno about you, but every adult I've seen not only has wings, they can fly, and they're pretty damn good at it!

Well, maybe I'm not observant enough to have ever seen the wings. When I've seen one of those large guys, in basements mostly, I'm already running in the othe direction.

I saw one once, in Boston, siddling up the steps into the stucco foundation under the record store where I worked (it was over a restaurant which was not the cleanest place.) and it was so big it was scarey.... almost as big as one of those goldfish you see in those koi (?) ponds.... could've been in a Japanese low budget monster film....

am I a bug wuss? You bet!

Good question. Maybe they start flying after they've fallen some so you don't notice it, or they focus on just breaking their fall? They aren't as willing to take flight as your typical housefly or a male brown-banded cockroach, but when I've seen them fly, they're only slightly weaker than a moth. In fact, they kind of resemble big brown moths when they fly.

I also find them icky but also kind of fascinating (Madagascar cockroaches are really fascinating!). I hate squashing the adults because big insects leave big messes. Ugh.
