Good question. Maybe they start flying after they've fallen some so you don't notice it, or they focus on just breaking their fall? They aren't as willing to take flight as your typical housefly or a male brown-banded cockroach, but when I've seen them fly, they're only slightly weaker than a moth. In fact, they kind of resemble big brown moths when they fly.
