The Idiot’s Guide to Yom Kippur

here

I hope everyone who plans to fast on Saturday is already starting to hydrate to prepare for the fast. I'm leading Shacharit for the first time this year, which by my estimation (having done the other 4 at least once over the years), is the longest service on Yom Kippur from end to end and in some ways the most vocally demanding. I hope my voice (and legs) can hold out for the ~2 hours that I expect Shacharit to last (longer if the ruach is good and I drag things out with niggunim to maintain that higher energy level).

Ba'al Korea here. Takes a lot if prep, but not nearly as difficult as Ba'al Tefila.

BTW, I'm pretty sure Mussaf is longer - the Seder Ha'avoda, Asara Harugei Malchut, and all the other Piutim make up for the bit from Hamelech through the end of Birk ot Kri'at Shema. In any case, good luck.

I've had a cold and feel weak and feverish (but no temperature)since Saturday so I'm very nervous about the fast this year. Hopefully I'll have no problems.

I can hydrate until the cows come home and it won't make a difference. My Yom Kippur is always the same.

Phase 1: Come to Kol Nidrei stuffed to the gills and confident that I can sail through this one.

Phase 2: Start to have my doubts during Ma'ariv Selichos.

Phase 3: Finish Ma'ariv thirsty and needing a glass of water.

Phase 4: Wake up Yom Kippur morning feeling thirsty.

Phase 5: Start to feel a little sleepy during Shacharis because of caffeine withdrawal.

Phase 6: Start to feel VERY sleepy during Kriat-Hatorah because of caffeine withdrawal.

Phase 7: Actually fall asleep for a little while during the Rabbi's speech Pre-Mussaf.

Phase 8: Start feeling nauseous during Chazaras Ha'shatz of Mussaf. Gets worse as Mussaf progresses.

Phase 9: Run home to take a nap during the pre-Minchah break.

Phase 10: Wake up late and miss Minchah leining, show up halfway through Maftir Yonah.

Phase 11: Start to feel better knowing that the end is in sight.

Phase 12: Start to feel much better during Chazaras Ha'Shatz of Neilah.

Phase 13: Feel a sense of loss once the shofar is blown; I really feel that I had been elevated during those 25 hours.

Phase 14: Go home and eat.

Phase 15: Feel nauseous the whole next day.

Ask your Rabbi whether it's permissible for you to refrain from fasting this year?

Nah. I would think refraining would be more for life saving foods, drinks, and medication, not for the common cold. The funny thing is I think my Rabbi would say it's OK.

Lol. Stupid autocorrect strikes again. It should read Ba'al Koreh.

And even funnier is that according to Halacha (Jewish religious law), you'd be tight, not the Rabbi.

I actually laughed out loud at your Phase 10 - I did that for years too, until I became Ba'al Koreh and had no choice but to be on time for Mincha Leining.

My father has been ba'al koreh on the high holidays at the shul I grew up in since he was 15, though he's only read the Akedah for many years now and however in recent years, the rabbi only lets him read every other year so that other members can have a chance. My grandfather was ba'al tekiah for about 50 years. I have yet to lead davening at that shul on the high holidays but I am proud to continue the family tradition as it were of being involved in a community on the chagim in a major way.

I'm not sure what combination of piyutim we're doing at Musaf, and the last time I did YK Musaf was back in 2008 and using the Harlow machzor which doesn't even have all the piyutim that most other machzorim have, but I think the hazzanut at the beginning of Shacharit is harder on the voice, and the fact that the davening isn't all one chunk makes it a bit harder. Finally, this minyan sings a lot, so whereas I might do straight nusach in another community, I'm doing more melodies and niggunim here. Anyway, I am looking forward to the opportunity to create as uplifting a davening experience as I can.

B'hatzlacha on leyning and gmar tov!
