The Canadian oil is in northern Alberta.Right now it is mainly transported by rail. That favors shorter distances, like to the US. A pipeline to the Pacific is unlikely because it would have to cross tribal lands, and the tribes aren't giving permission. A pipeline to the Gulf Coast would allow cheap transport through the widened Panama Canal to China. |

I read somewhere the USA can be 100% self sufficient with oil produced in this country but lack of refinery capacity prevents that. IF that is indeed true I wonder why are we not building more refineries. |

And the reason why we're not building refineries and instead are closing them down is because of "supply and demand" ... ruin the supply, demand stays the same or increases and those prices ... well ... shoot through the roof like now. Gordon Gecko summed it up decades ago in the film, "Wall Street" ... "greed is good." |

Regardless of where the actual oil we burn comes from, our consumption of oil raises worldwide prices and ensures every terrorist and tin pot dictator in an oil exporting country has full coffers. Unless we're going to set up a state run oil company to distribute domestically produced oil at below market rates, it doesn't matter how much oil we produce, we'll continue to import and that will continue to enrich our enemies. |

IMO our modern day presidents has done a poor job on directing this country towards energy self sufficency (oil with a transition to research and implementation of renewable enrrgy) and doing something about stemming the flow of american companies outsourcing our jobs away. If any presidential candidates makes those two issues amoung their top priorities with a good plan of action they would have my vote. Don't care what party their in. |
