Family Of Man Fatally Shot By Salt Lake City Police Want Justice

By Christine McCarthy
Tuesday, August 12 2014, 11:42 PM MDT
A day after Salt Lake City police shot and killed a man whose family claim he was unarmed, questions about the shooting remain unanswered.

South Salt Lake police are investigating the shooting because it occurred within the city, but near the border with Salt Lake City. Officers have not yet said whether they recovered a weapon at the scene.

"They're here to protect and serve. More like shoot and kill," said Jerrail Taylor, Dillon Taylor's older brother. "Anybody in this house or anybody on the streets, if we kill someone, we're doing 25 years to life in prison. I'd like this cop to lose his job and do the same amount of time like a regular human being."

Dillon Taylor, 20, who is from Salt Lake, was exiting 7-Eleven with his brother and cousin, Adam Thayne, around 7 p.m. on Monday, when Salt Lake City police arrived, responding to a report of a man waving a gun in the area.

The officers ordered the men to the ground. Two of them complied, but Dillon, who police say matched the suspect's description, did not go down.

"It came in as a 911 call that there was a man with a gun," said South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Darrin Sweeten. "He was verbally challenged and ultimately was shot."

Sweeten did not release further details on the shooting on Tuesday.

Dillon's brother and cousin claim they were on their way to visit his parents' graves and that Dillon was surprised by the police presence. He was not aggressive, they said.

"He had headphones in, and he couldn't hear [anything], and then they finally surrounded him," Jerrail said. "They're like, 'Get on the ground,' and [he] pulled up his pants and [they] shot him."

Thayne believes police might have thought his cousin was reaching for a gun when, in reality, he grabbed his cell phone.

"I was in shock, because he was wearing a white t-shirt and there was blood all over it," Thayne said. "They ran up and handcuffed him. He wasn't moving."

A witness's video shows police yelling for the two men to remain on the ground as Thayne repeatedly screams that they have shot his cousin.

The two men were taken to the police station, but released hours later without being charged or cited.

Family said Dillon had had struggles throughout his teenage and adult life, including a criminal past, after losing his parents at the age of 12.

They hope to remember him as a loyal friend and devoted father-to-be. His girlfriend is just a couple months pregnant, Jerrail said.

"He was the funniest kid ever," Jerrail said. "His own baby will never meet him."

The family has set up an account to help pay for funeral expenses. Wells Fargo Bank is accepting donations to the "Justice for Dillon" account #6386866385.

Family and friends are planing a vigil at 7 p.m. at the 7-Eleven where he died.
No more media coverage than this, no riots, no national guard, no Eric Holder coming down to visit. Why? Give you one guess why.

SLC police wear body cameras too.

Give you one guess why.

Probability. Police shooting unarmed people (and other scandals) are everyday events in this country— only a small handful spark widespread outrage.

Come on now. We can't expect the President to address the shooting of every unarmed young male. After all - he's on vacation!

Come on now. We can't expect al sharpton and jesse jackson to protest the police shooting of every unarmed young male!

Come on now, how many shootings do you think that the justice department "Civil Rights Division" is able to look into?

Where is the outrage from bingbong condemning this police officer. Where are the rest of the liberal phonies

Where are all the calls of "pigs and Nazis" from Salaam.

Has a probation violation become a capital offense?

Does this even the score, salaam, bingbong, streetie?

Well, you're a hateful prick, you show that every time you say something, so it must make sense to you...

Cop shoots a black person, there's a God awful riot.

Cop Shoots a white person, nothing happens. ergo, if this was supposed to be an "equal" society and people like you keep pushing for, then ether every white person in Salt Lake City now has carte blanche to riot and loot, or every body is Fergusion should sit down, shut the hell up and let the justice system do it's God damn job.

If society is to be equal, then everything must be equal. If the response is not to be the same, then society must therefor remain unequal, and everything people like you have ever said is a hypocritical lie.

However, had it not been for the people in Ferguson standing up and making noise (no, I do NOT condone the rioters, in fact I saw an AP article onmy phone that analyised the arrests over the past 2 weeks, seems only 7 out of 143 were Fergusonresidents...this is happening from outside) noboy would notice the kid in SLC, or the kid in Philly, or the young man in NYC, or.....

Hmm.

That epitome of reportorial accuracy, the Daily Mail, says he didn't have a broken eye socket.

OK, that's far from credible too, but I am beginning to wonder. If he really had a broken socket, the county prosecutor would know he had no case. You'd think he'd go to the governor and say, let's try to calm this down by letting people know.

LOL!

First, you really ned to be nicer to people. Your nastiness reveals your hate readily. Even other RWers here notice.

Second, the only thing the people of Ferguson want IS justice. The residents of Ferguson are NOT the troublemakers. Out of the 140something people arrested during the past 2ish weeks, only 7 to date are FROM Ferguson. Trouble came from outside taking the opportunity. These people did not ask for this, despite their anger at the situation. Do NOT confuse what is going on here, regardless of what the talking box says.(I've been keeping watch and YOU are the biggest verbatim spewer of talkradio hate here on this story)

Tragic story. Is anybody stopping the family from going to the media or demanding answers from the police, going to their elected representative (counsel person, congressman, etc) to have a private investigation done? If they did demonstrate or have some kind of protest will the same cast of characters be outraged at them for doing so? I ask because if they have resources and no one is stopping them from doing so and they seem to be trying to get answers and the more power to them I hope they receive justice.

I'd be curious to know how many arrested are from next door and how many are really from outside. St. Louis is made up of a lot of small towns; one side of Main St. is Town A and the other side is Town B. There's not much difference between parts of Ferguson and parts of Florissant, except for the zip code. I read that some of the agitators came from far away as NY and CA.

Those stats came out yesterday, off the top of my head, it was 143 total including 7 (SEVEN) Ferguson residents. I'm quite sure bout the seven, do feel free to correct me on the 140ish. This was as of yesterday. The fact that the source of the violence was NOT within Ferguson should tell everyone a lot.

You're correct on the numbers but you shouldn't draw conclusions from the fact that most arrested were not from Ferguson because there are several other towns right next door. As I posted earlier, which side of the street you live on determines whether you live in Ferguson or Florissant. To call residents from Florissant "outsiders" is misleading because anyone driving down the main business drag is going to deal with Ferguson police.
