I was 215 but now I'm 216 sometimes 217 in the morning. I have not lifted weights in three weeks but did sprints last two weeks. Sprints are supposed to burn fat but I don't know. They are hard on the body and have high rate of injuries to the hams, shins, lower back, and feet. I'll do them one more week and see how I feel. Hate hitting a plateau. |

Hi there again, and I'll welcome you to OTchat where the fur flies off the squirrels every day ... here's MY take on it FWIW.The Parade in question is sponsored (or at least has been all along) by the "Ancient Order of Hibernians" which goes back a LONG time, and has always been arch-conservative Irish usually membered by oldhead NYPD, Fire, that kind of folks. The organizers are geezers even older than I am. Heh. I've marched in that Parade back in the 60's and 70's and ended up with the Northern Irish folks since I was dating a gurl from NAIF (look it up, they were considered terrorists back in the day. Got my pix taken by all the feds and answered questions about my participation in it for many years afterwards. My take on it all is that the Parade is one of those things where groups of "like-minded tards" gathered to show off their ethnic pride in a similar manner to most of the other parades in the city for other groups, including the "Gay Pride" folks, Carribeans and other groups who felt the need to march with banners to show their own interests. As to the St Patty's day thing, they pretty much run their own show like everybody else and are entitled to set their own rules for how their "road show" goes. And everyone else has the freedom (I hope) to ignore them and do their own thing and just not participate. Their parade kinda lost its luster when the city cracked down on drinking along the parade route (I'm Irish, having a beer and yelling "fuck yeah" was a cultural entitlement although I found the whole thing silly. There are other St Patty's parades in the city which is not under the lead of such backwards minds (fortunately) and I see the proper solution to go hang onto one of the alternatives. They have the right to their own thing as surely as anyone else has the right to theirs and I worry that if they're imposed upon to accept "free association" that they don't agree with, that it will clear the ground for other parades to have what the other groups might consider "interlopers" taking away from whatever their parade is about. If they shun LGBT, then LGBT should join one of the other parades just like the Mayor did in avoiding the Hibernian parade and going elsewhere. As more people shun the exclusive parades, other more inclusive parades will attract a bigger audience. But to my mind, the Hibernian parade is the last gasps of old school and just let them be as they dwindle. Just a thought. :) |

I'm all for individual groups maintaining a sense of community and pride, and as such I don't necessarily object to long standing tradition, Nevertheless some acts that in the past were considered inline with tradition can tread a fine line of what is culturally accepted in the present day.While alternative ideals should not be imposed onto these independent organizations I still do believe that there should be a fair amount of encouragement for a general tolerance. Arguably too much to ask from many, but what else can be done? |
