Bridge collapse - amazingly no deaths

I-5 bridge over the Skagit River in WA. Water temperature guaranteed to be exactly 32 degree F because of all the snow melt the river is carrying.

Very fortunate that the collapse occurred during daylight and in a relatively rural stretch of roadway. At night, you'd probably have many more cars drive off until emergency vehicles were on scene.

It sounds like the preliminary cause is an oversize truck hitting the bridge (presumably traveling under the span at one point). One has to hope that there is more to the incident than that alone -- otherwise we've got some really brittle bridges out there.

The bridge's superstructure extended above the road deck, so the oversized load would not have needed to pass under the bridge in order to cause damage to the structure.

Unusual for a major highway like that to have a bridge with a height limit.

And in fact there's no hieght limit listed on the official WA DOT web page.

http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/commercialvehicle/restrictions/roadlist.aspx

The I-5 mile 170 restriction is farther south.

I-5 bridge over the Skagit River in WA.

And to think, I drove over that thing about a year and a half ago at night on my way to Vancouver...

Yeah, that bridge was fairly new when my Uncle in Alaska and the negihbors used to come down to Washington state with a truck to get discounts on everything given the prices in Alaska. It was pretty thin steel then ...

Here is the bridge in question, and it doesn't look like the girders are less than 15 feet.

Hmm... as far as "alternate routes" I can see two... well, and a railroad bridge. Maybe a temporary RailRunner like setup will be necessary?

Another report says the truck was overly wide, not overly high, and struck the girders on the side, not above.

That kinda reminds me of a bridge near my neighborhood, which I occasionally ride across.

Exits half a mile south and north, and parallel road 1/4 mile east. Should be able to carry maybe 1/4 the usual highway traffic.

Until they get a temporary replacement bridge in this will be a huge mess.

Which has the same name as the bridge in my area I was thinking of (though not similar in construction).

Snicker. When I cross that bridge, I know I'm mentally done with half of my trip to Montréal or my return home from there depending on which way I'm traveling.. :-)

Although, I have to remember that there's a BJs gas station off exit 2 on the Northway...

That would make more sense from the little bit I've seen. There was one report that the truck had filed all the necessary paperwork for an oversized load and was given this specific routing.

Report confirmed. Load still hit the side though ... steering is a powerful tool.
