TRAGEDY CLAIMS LIFE OF SEATTLE MAN ATTEMPTING TO DRIBBLE SOCCER BALL TO BRAZIL FOR CHARITY

By DAN KARELL

A man dribbling a soccer ball from Seattle to Brazil was hit by a truck on Tuesday morning in Lincoln City, Oregon, and pronounced dead at a local hospital that evening.

Richard Swanson, a Seattle native, had decided to dribble a soccer ball 10,000 miles to Brazil for charity. He was using a ball made by One World Futbol, which are made to be nearly indestructible and are donated to children in developing nations around the world.

But just two weeks into his journey, a truck driver hit the 42-year-old along U.S. route 101, a coastal stretch of road that runs through Lincoln City, Oregon. According to reports, the truck driver has not been charged by police.

Swanson was set to travel through eleven countries in an effort to arrive in Sao Paulo at the start of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, according to his website, breakawaybrazil.com.

It's ironic he should have been killed in a highway accident one state away.

I really wonder how he expected to get all the way to Brazil on foot. As you referenced, the last time I looked there was still a road gap of 50 km or so of Panama jungle. Some people attempted a U.S. to [IIRC] Argentina, road trip not that many years ago. As they got further and further south, what the border agents didn't get the bandits did. They DID make it to their destination having lost almost everything, including their original car, but they were all alive.

Heh, sounds like a National Lampoon's or Harold and Kumar movie plot. A documentary about this might actually garner some ratings!
