Wellllll ... at least to the IND, it was "UPTOWN and THE BRONX" so I suppose Melrose is upstate to somebody. Up here though, it's pretty much come down to where the city influence ends (aside from touristas) and the MTA has kinda defined that all for us. No MTA taxes? Then you're *finally* upstate. :) |

Whole area went in the dumper when the railroad stopped going that way. Now "dumper" with reference to Orange county is not comparable to a nabe in the city going in the dumper, it means "abandon ship for elsewhere" usually because it's a kinda dying place. |

He would blend in perfectly in Broward County, Florida. There are witness protection or former witness protection Italians living in plain site down there. One opened a pizzeria and ended up getting in trouble with the law again. Fabio Bartalotta and Anthony Tabbita are two other names that come to mind and Florida Italians from NY who have been in witness protection. |

Yeah, I guess you're right about the Italians blending in better in South Florida. Interestingly, my white Jewish dad retired to Athens, Georgia. Even though he lived most of his life in Brooklyn, he never wanted to retire where there were ex-New Yorkers. His favorite part of Florida is by Pensacola, where nobody from New York goes. |

I knew a former Astoria, Queens resident who moved to Fort Walton Beach, Florida (near Pensacola) and opened a pizza shop.
