Before he became a Christian, nothing. He was brought up without religion. He was never a Muslim, that was a fib told to his Christian school administrator by his parents so as to keep him out of catechism classes, which were mandatory. Every kid had to have religion in school. To get out of it, one had to tell the Christian schools they were Muslims, and vice-versa. It's a well documented fact.

Technically the catechism part of that article was pure speculation that was not confirmed by Obama. He does say that he was never a practicing Muslim. I no longer believe much of anything that he says, but whether he was or wasn't Muslim at 6 yo (or any age really) makes no difference to me. I don't think that he's a Muslim (or Christian) now and that makes no difference either. It does make a difference that he's likely lying about it, but that's what politicians do these days I guess. |

And because I have no PROFF, I'll just say that the story as explained is highly plausible because if we're to believe that it was Soetoro's doing, and he wasn't a particularly devout Muslim to begin with, I think he'd have a problem with his 'son' being raised a Catholic much in the same way I wouldn't want any of my kids to be raised in the church of Scientology even if they own the college.Putting that down in Indonesia in a school where you WILL be taught Catholicism unless you have a trump card scarier than the Pope, I can see a "parent" doing that just to keep the priests off his kid. :) And somehow I doubt the kid made the choice in the first place. Most kids when it comes to religion are, "OK ... can I have that cookie now?" |

Most kids when it comes to religion are, "OK ... can I have that cookie now?"Exactly. The best part of synagogue was the big cookies with the chocolate circle in the middle that were sitting there on the hallway table for the taking after the service. I was always the first one out so I could take a handful of those things before they were gone - I'd grab them and run out of the building something I am not proud of but it's true. G-d help me. |
