Their fallback (face saving) position is more comprehensive background checks but that's not the goal. They want the absolute assault weapons ban as their big step towards neutering the 2nd amendment. However, in most of the deadly mass shootings, the common thread was not the weapon used but the mental stability of the shooter. Prior to Sandy Hook; The 2 DC Snipers used Bushmaster 223s and 13 were killed The Aurora Col. Theater shooter used 4 weapons including a .223 assault rifle, 2 Glock 40s and a 12 Ga. Remington Shotgun. 12 were killed In Columbine a 10 shot carbine was one of 4 guns used. The others were a Tec-DC9, 2 sawed off shotguns and an assortment of kniives. 13 died In Tucson a Glock 9 was used & there were 6 deaths. At Ft. Hood, 2 private weapons, a FN 5.7 and a .357 revolver were used. No military issued weapons were used. 13 died. And at Va. Tech, a Glock 19 and a Walther P22 were used, causing 32 deaths Again, in the 3 of these 6 incidents, no assault rifles were used and yet 51 people died. Perhaps we should focus on the mental stability of the shooter and not the type of gun they used. |

Seems to me the data could just as easily support that position. The fact is that the goal is to ban assault rifles regardless of what the facts are. |

Of course,we should all want to see some concrete controls on guns, something that would eliminate the chances of someone that's mentally ill getting an assault rifle and shooting up a theater,a school, a university, wherever. We should all want to see accidents and suicides come down in number, that requires mandatory education and rules for gun storage in the home....such as mandatory safes, trigger locks, what works best. Over time it would be good to see this happen, ther eis nothing wrong with responsible gun ownership. Problem is getting all gun owners to be responsible.....which would means fewer guns obtained in burglaries and fewer getting on the street, be they stolen or purchased through a straw man/gun runner. |

That's a common thread for all these as well. Civilians do not need more than 6-7 bullets to defend themselves, and no hunter needs more either.Banning assault rifles would do more to inhibit the thought of committing these heinous crimes and that makes it a perfectly valid instrument in fighting gun violence. We did see a decline in shooting massacres during the assault weapons ban. Do recall how many guns the Columbine shooters had. |

I don't see the need for Heller to be overturned right now. For the time being I'd be fine seeing how the illegal gun trafficking problem holds up when we have universal background checks, total gun registry, and an ATF that isn't hamstrung by NRA written riders attached to spending bills. If those measures can cut down on the number of illegal dealers, straw purchasers, and other loopholes for criminals to obtain guns and thus reduce the number of guns on the street then there's no need to overturn Heller. But then DC's firearms laws were written in part out of frustration at federal indifference to the plight of cities who find their streets at the mercy of whatever state has the most permissive firearms laws. If background checks and ATF reforms had been mandated at the Federal level, and proven to work, there never would have been a need for DC's anti-firearm laws. In the unlikely event universal background checks and reforms to the ATF do not fix our problem then other measures would have to be undertaken. But it'd remain to be seen if that'd take the form of the NRA's million man standing rent-a-cop army in every public place, or a supreme court case to overturn Heller. We certainly know the latter would be the most affordable alternative, which is where those "insurance"/fee proposals come from. |

Haven't been to Elmont in nearly 30 years now.....thanks to Google I can see how it looks now and I'l pass.Even Wal-Cliffe is condos now. Used to be a swimming pool and roller rink. Right by Clara Carlson on Washington Blvd, Is that TSS still there? Used to be Great Eastern, I remember when I was very young it was a WW2 memorial billboard and potato field behind it. That goes back to the early 60s. They apparently either tore down Alva T Stanforth and moved the library there or converted it. Surprised to see someone that even knows what Elmont IS, much less anything more about it. It's like an invisible village...of 30,000. |

Feb 14, 2013There is also an excellent article about suicide risk among gun owning populations. In this case a Wyoming family that treated guns so matter of factly they didn't lock them away (didn't even own a safe!) had their seemingly normal healthy 17 yr old son kill himself, a spontaneous idea after punishment for a minor indiscretion. People that treat guns as anything but a lethal weapon need help to get the point across that hey are first and foremost lethal weapons, so they act accordingly and lock their guns away. Proof that one can safely store weapons should be mandatory. |
