Remind me not to trust anything I learned in history class at school without researching it again myself (not that it was discussed in depth). :p

Having the former CSA under our control but disenfranchised would have been unworkable in the long term (how do you reconcile that with American principles?) And ultimately, while the ethno-religious basis...

...of the political contention between the two parts of the country may be problematic, and may well lead to greater issues down the line, over all, it probably benefited the country.

Make no mistake however, Red America (mostly Scots-Irish and Evangelical Lutheran German/Scandinavian, and English Mormons) has a substantial ethnic rift with Blue America (mostly lowland English, Ashkenazi Jewish, and "liberal" German/Scandis). Hence, the problem isn't going to go away any time soon, and if anything might get worse. The South and Plains want to live their own way, the problem is, because we're one nation, we're dragged into it. It seems tempting to let them go do it, so the liberal North need not be dragged down by them anymore. But then we have a rest of the world to deal with, and having our fleet able to operate out of Southern naval bases is nice...
