To people of Bachmann's generation, "Russia" and "the Soviet Union" mean the same thing.Yes, because before Soviet Russia was Soviet Russia it had been the Russian Empire, which everyone called Russia. Likewise the Austro-Hungarian Empire was called Austria=Hungary and the Ottoman Empire was called Turkey. It's not odd that there are countries that used to be part of Turkey, Hungary, Austria, and Russia that aren't any more. It just took longer for the Russian Empire to fall apart, and it still hasn't been completely dismantled. |
