Circumstantial evidence can convict people, if there is enough of it, but direct physical evidence linking killer to victim, presented by the DA in a clear, concise manner, is a reasonable expectation of most juries today. That's not "CSI", that's ordinary prudence. If you're going to send a person to jail for the rest of their lives (or, in fact, to their grave), wouldn't YOU want to be as certain as humanly possible that you are convicting the right person?

And, again, NO, juries CANNOT just "do whatever they want". They MUST judge the case based ONLY on the facts given at trial, and the law as the judge charges it. That's it, and that's all. If the verdict is "jury nullification", it's within those two parameters I just described.
