They are indeed. From the numbers you give it seems teachers in the US probably do make more than over here.

That depends on your definition of 'poor shape'. I remember visiting an American high school back in 1996 when I was in my senior year, and the principal apologising for the state of the school buildings, adding that they were going to be replaced with a new campus. We thought she was joking, as the infrastructure was better than what an average Belgian school had. You won't find things like olympic sized swimming pools, fully equipped gyms, etc. at Belgian high schools, and many buildings are from the 1950s or 1960s.
